This 35-foot foundation wall crack is a perfect example of what can happen when Michigan’s freeze-thaw cycles go to work. As moisture in the soil freezes, it expands and pushes against the foundation wall. When temperatures rise, the soil contracts again. Over time, that constant expansion and contraction can place tremendous stress on a foundation, leading to cracking and wall movement.
