I was replacing a toilet and a faucet, today. The toilet fl**ge was busted. This usually allows the toilet to rock and the seal, made by the wax ring, to be broken. No getting around it... this had to be repaired. This picture is taken from one side of the fl**ge so that you can better see just how badly this fl**ge was busted. By the way... the toilet being installed was an American Standard Champion IV, one of the best flushing toilets on the market. But, as you will read, there are other reasons this was a good choice. They have another model I really like. It's called the Vormax. It is usually more expensive, but a good choice, as well.

So, here are three common choices that can be used to repair a broken fl**ge. The one on the left works really well if it can be slid underneath the broken fl**ge (with the bolt in place... maneuver it through the crack in the fl**ge) and screwed to the floor. That will fix one side. The "closet fl**ge" (the black one) in the middle repairs both sides and screws to the floor in all four corners. This won't work well on concrete slabs... or floors where the wood around the fl**ge is soft or rotting. And the "fix" on the right is actually a spacer. It has it's uses, but it has to be used with some artistic skill. Sometimes a fl**ge has to be removed and replaced. That's a story for another day... not this job.

I chose the full fl**ge repair. It fixed the problem and reinforced the other/good side. Notice the threaded washers that are being used to hold the fl**ge bolts. While reading about this toilet installation you may get the impression that I really like the way American Standard engineers their toilets. I do! You can tighten those threaded washers down and, in some cases, add even more strength to the weakened or repaired fl**ge.

This fl**ge is repaired and ready for the toilet to be installed. Officially, you are supposed to press the wax ring up against the under side of the toilet and then seat it. But you can't take a picture of it that way.

Many of the American Standard toilets come with a tool that can be used to tighten the tank bolts. This avoids over-tightening and cracking the tank. Cracked and busted tanks... along with broken busted toilet fl**ges... are the two most common mistakes amateurs make when installing a toilet. American Standard has pretty much goof-proofed this part of the installation.

American Standard is the only manufacturer I know of that uses nylon/plastic tri-corn (thee corners or gripping points) nuts. I love them. You hand tighten, so you are not going to over-tighten them and wind up breaking your fl**ge. AND they don't corrode! Corroded bolts either fall apart or rust to the bolt so that you cannot remove them.
