Tips for Freeze Guard to Operate Properly:
1. Maintain water level in the pool to keep the pumps from sucking air into the lines and losing prime.
2. Make sure all filtration pumps are running during freezing temperatures.
3. Make sure the breakers are kept ON to the pool equipment from the main breaker and sub-panel if present.
4. Make sure there is no sudden loss of power or equipment malfunction. If the power goes down or a piece of vital equipment fails, you must “winterize” the pool equipment.
5. Check for any leaks at the equipment that may cause a loss of significant water.

Winterizing Your Swimming Pool Equipment:
Notes: Your swimming pool and spa equipment may include an automatic freeze guard that monitors the air temperature. It activates and bypasses the normal schedule in order to turn the pumps on that it protects as moving water tends not to freeze. You Do Not Need to Winterize if this system is working properly unless you suspect a loss of power or equipment malfunction.
1. Turn off the power at the breaker, sub-panel, and main off switch.
2. Open the pool filter air release to relieve pressure and start to drain the water.
3. Remove pump lid.
4. Remove pump drain plugs. There are usually 2 drain plugs for regular pool pumps located on the bottom left or right. Cleaner pumps have one drain plug usually located in the front of the pump towards the bottom.
5. Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the filter.
6. Remove the drain plug from the heater.
7. Unscrew at least one union on any salt cell.
8. Leave all drain plugs in the pump basket to prevent loss.
9. Cover the equipment with a tarp.
10. Do not drain the pool or spa.
Remove any drain plugs the equipment may have.

Weather related update...

We were out at some of your houses today looking at different problems. We have one addition to our freezing weather advice. Whether your system remains running or is winterized, the deployment of a tarp over the equipment with a heat source under it is a good idea.

The tarp traps warm air under it from the pumps that are running. The outermost parts of the system are helped additionally with an incandescent bulb burning or a space heater installed in such a way as to not start a fire.

We saw some issues with pumps losing prime due to low water in the pool or leaves clogging skimmers. This causes ice to form in the pipes. When water level is restored to normal or the skimmer blockage is cleared, the system either cannot prime itself or has already frozen and cannot churn water.

We will be working again Tuesday. Call or text at 817-323-4005 if you have any issues.

Due to inclement weather, Butler Pool Service trucks will not be on the roads today. We will assess the situation Tuesday and announce then. If you need to reach us, please call or text 817-323-4005.

Winter Weather Advisory: It is going to be below freezing for over 24 hours starting this Sunday. Your swimming pool equipment should be on Freeze Protection this entire time. If your system does not have a freeze protector, you can run your main pump manually until the freeze warning has subsided. These suggestions are the best when electricity supply is operational.

Should you lose power, the best thing to do is to "winterize" your pool equipment. This is performed by turning off the equipment's electrical breaker, pulling 2 drain plugs on each pump, pulling 1 drain plug on the filter, 1 drain plug on the heater if present. Put all of the plugs in the skimmer basket so that they will not be lost. Open the filter air release. This operation will not winterize the pool structure. Should ice form on the surface, break it up occasionally the best you can to avoid structure damage.

There is no substitute for pool supervision. Even if you believe you have winterized your pool or are relying solely on the system freeze protection, some unforeseen event could happen. We will be available by phone even if the weather prevents our trucks from safe operation.

Call us if you have any questions, concerns, or urgencies. 817-323-4005
