Hey there, garden besties!
As we roll into late summer, it’s time to focus on keeping those roses in check! 🌹✂️
Here’s the scoop: you’ll want to prune your roses down by about a third of their height. Just make sure you’re cutting at a 45° angle with some clean pruners. Don’t forget to take out any canes that aren’t doing so hot or are growing all awkwardly. This pruning is a bit lighter than what you’d do in February. You can expect those beautiful blooms to come back in about 30-45 days, depending on the variety.
📝 If you’ve been on top of deadheading (removing old blooms) during the summer, you might not need to prune as much or even at all!
Also, keep that watering routine going strong during this dry spell. 💦
Make sure to clear out any debris from your rose beds and pull any pesky w**ds that might be around. A little pre-emergence herbicide can help keep those fall w**d seeds at bay. And don’t forget to add a fresh layer of Pine Straw mulch!
🌿 Keep up with your preventive fungicide spray to tackle blackspot. That pesky fungus loves to pop back up when the temps drop in early fall.
Finally, after your pruning, go ahead and apply some slow-release Rose fertilizer at half the usual rate. ✔️ BioAdvanced All-in-One Rose & Flower Care is awesome for fertilizing and helps keep black spot and bugs away. You can find it at your local Big Box stores.
Happy pruning! ✂️
