We all know the benefits of DIY are things like generally lower costs, complete control over the project, and of course the sense of accomplishment from completing the project yourself, but there can be several risks involved as well. The most obvious when it comes to roof repairs is injuries which can be due to a fall, ladder accident, or tool injuries. Falls from roofs and ladders are one of the number one causes of death in construction, and most lay people don’t have the safety equipment they use so injuries are even more likely. Another problem a DIY person may face is misdiagnosing the problem because they only focus on the problem they can see, make inadequate repairs based on the wrong diagnosis or simply using the wrong or cheap materials, and can even exacerbating issues. You may end up spending extra to make further repairs, replacing poor quality materials that don’t last, or have an overage of materials that are wasted and may not be returnable. One of the most significant disadvantages of DIY roof repairs is the lack of warranties and guarantees. You don’t have the workman’s guarantee the comes with having a professional do the job, and sometimes doing repairs on your own will void the manufacturer’s warranty because it wasn’t installed by a professional. While DIY roof repairs may seem like an attractive option due to potential savings, hidden costs and risks associated may outweigh the benefits. Hiring experienced roofers ensures accurate diagnosis, quality workmanship, and peace of mind. Entrusting the job to experts often proves to be a wise choice for reliable and effective roof repairs, call us today if you’d like to schedule an inspection or repair!

Today is Veterans day, it is the day we honor all of those who have fought for our country. Originally, this holiday was called Armistice Day and was first celebrated in 1921 when both France and the U.S. buried an unnamed solider who died in WWI. This date is significant because that was the day when WWI ended with a cease fire, Nov 11, 1918 at 11:11.

Guy Fawkes Day and Gunpowder Day are one and the same and celebrated today. Are we celebrating Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators, for attempting to eliminate religious persecution? Or, are we celebrating the government’s successful discovery of the plot, saving many lives? It's up to you to decide. The gunpowder conspirators plotted to blow up the British Houses of Parliament to rebel against the king and his supporters for persecuting and punishing Catholics. They planned to do so when the king and his supporters were in the buildings, but were caught just before setting it off.

Today we are talking about warranties. Generally warranties will cover the materials or the labor in separate warranties. The material warranty is usually from the manufacturer and will cover defects. They usually last about 20 years or more, often with stipulations. The labor warranty or workmanship coverage and is offered by the contractor and it generally lasts for 1-10 years, ours is 2 years. If you plan on selling your home in the near future check if the warranty is transferable, some are not. Make sure to carefully read what it includes and what it excludes. Typical exclusions include damage from extreme weather, improper maintenance, unauthorized repairs (only a licensed contractor can make repairs), if ventilation standards aren't met, trees are too close to the house, or wear and tear over time. Many warranties often include a clause to discuss maintenance responsibilities and some ever require a routine inspection from a professional, it can be helpful to document maintenance with dates and actives in case you ever need to make a claim. And finally, be familiar with the claims process in case you ever need to file one. Generally for a claim you would of course need a copy of your warranty, any pictures of the issues, any inspections, and any previous correspondence with the contractor.

Today is National First Responders Day. Here in Mississippi, especially in our rural areas, our firefighters and some EMTs are often volunteers and not paid which makes what they do all the more important and special. Today we say thank you and honor all those who head towards the danger to help while others run the other way for protection.

The worst ways to protect your roof
- Relying on a tarp for long term: Tarps can deteriorate quickly under constant exposure to the sun, wind, and rain leading to leaks. They don’t provide proper ventilation which can cause mold and mildew issues, and as holes form in the tarp water can get trapped underneath causing more damage.
- Not performing regular maintenance such as clearing off debris, cleaning out gutters, and replacing cracked or missing shingles
- DIY repairs without proper knowledge
- Using a pressure washer to clean your roof can cause shingles to tear or strip the shingles of protective granules
- Installing solar panels without proper guidance you can run the risk of puncturing your roof membrane and void your warranty
- Using cheap materials that are less durable
- Walking on your roof can crack or dislodge shingles and worse yet, can weaken the structural integrity of the roof
- Applying tar or sealant as a fix-all
- Installing layers of shingles over the old ones
- Painting your roof can stop the water from running off appropriately and can trap moisture between coats
