My favorite method to protect plants, animals and pipes is using heated wire.

There are 4 types I would recommend : Soil, Roofing, Pipe, & flooring heated wire. These wires are fire safe, self-regulating, and are great for wrapping sensitive trees & shrubs without cutting off sunlight like frost blankets do. Frost blankets are recommended on top of the heated wire for ice storms.

I like to use soil wires around the base of the tree and around the tree spaced approx. 4". covering every branch. This helps to prevent ice from forming on the trees. though pipe and roofing wire work equally well.
