Putting a covering over top your unit does more harm than good.

Your outdoor unit needs to pull in a large amount of air through the sides and discharge hot air out of the top. An umbrella, canopy, tarp, or homemade cover can trap that hot air around the unit and allow it to be pulled right back in. Which will in turn affect the units ability to cool efficiently.

Your outdoor unit is designed to operate outside in the sun and rain. The best thing you can do for it is keep it clean and let it breathe.
