Did you know that firefighters are in charge of buying and getting their own food while working? This means that each shift has to try and find time during their day to go to the store to buy food and supplies for their meals. Who pays for it? The firefighters.
What happens if a call comes in while shopping? Firefighters drop everything and go to the call. Whether they paid for it or not, the 911 call is the priority. Hopefully the store workers will help and put their food in the fridge to keep until it can be picked up but there’s also the chance that the crew will not make it back due the call volume.
What if the food they bought is already on the rig when a call comes out? The food sits, and will remain there until they get back to the station. That could be 30 minutes or hours depending on the calls.
So maybe next time you see firefighters standing in line to checkout with groceries, let them go first as they might be running out that door any second.
