MFLA recently took a trip to visit our current project ‘The Ocean Beach Climate Change Adaptation Project’ (OBCCAP) situated along the Great Highway south of Sloat and north of Skyline.

The upgrades will include recreational and open space elements in place of the roadway with multi-use trails, restrooms, beach access stairs and parking. This project will protect critical wastewater infrastructure and maximize habitat restoration and public recreational access.

Santa Lucia Preserve ‘Curveball’ | A Site Responsive Design

We are currently in the final stages of planting and installing surface materials at ‘Curveball’, an impressive residence nestled with an 18,000 acres of protected natural landscape. This project will be completed in Summer 2026 after five years of working closely with the project team.

On the Boards | Regenerative Agriculture Garden Exhibit

Jack London Park Partners envisioned a new exhibit that will highlight Jack London‘s progressive farming legacy in agricultural science and ancient, restorative methods. His mission started in the early 1900s when he saw the results of extractive practices from single crop farming, rendering enormous tracts of US farmland infertile.

Testing and educational components of this work began at Beauty Ranch, Glen Ellen, which is the site for a new regenerative, agricultural garden exhibit.

During the concept sketch phase, MFLA worked with the existing landscape of the site to envision a program that engaged with nature, was an interactive space for learning and a community called the action. This includes a dynamic variety of garden beds which showcases native insectary planting geared towards soil regeneration, carbon sequestration, increased biodiversity, and reduction of habitat loss. This outdoor classroom was important for host, hosting tours, school group, groups, and community events to inspire future stewards of the land.

MFLA’s favorite concept direction is inspired by the biophilic design of the oyster.

Known as an ‘oyster pirate’ at the young age of 15, Jack London started his own pirate operation, harvesting oysters from the heavily patrolled Bay Area coastal beds as an alternative to grueling and badly paid factory labor.

Stay tuned for how this project evolves.

Jack London Park Partners envisioned a new exhibit that will highlight Jack London‘s progressive farming legacy in agricultural science and ancient restorative methods. His mission started in the early 1900s, when he saw the results of extractive practices from single crop farming, rendering enormous tracts of US farmland infertile. London’s mission became focused on how to organically bring life and vitality back to the soil in a way that could be replicated across the United States.

The historical preservation and enhancement of Lawrence Halprin’s original residential design of this Mid-Century Modern home, began about 5 years ago for the MFLA studio. The property was originally designed and constructed in 1950 on a 1.25 acre parcel with some distinctive spatial organization that is characteristic of Halprin’s early design.

While some ideas were implemented, others were intended but not actually built. The material selection and details chosen by MFLA were also representative of Halprin’s early work and the MCM Bay Area landscape architectural movement.

MFLA encountered a site that was severely degraded from its original design, but still had a legible Halprin style. The studio strove to preserve the essence of the intended design while updating the scale of the garden to reflect its contemporary uses.

We are excited to see this project completed this Summer 2026 and will share more soon.
