🐝 PEST ID CHALLENGE: PAPER WASP OR YELLOW JACKET? 🐝

Can you spot the differences between these two common stinging insects? 👀 Take a close look at the photos and see if you can tell which is which before reading below!

🔎 Here’s what to look for:

🐝 Paper Wasps
• Longer, slimmer bodies with a narrow waist
• Longer legs that often dangle while flying
• Typically have reddish-brown coloring mixed with yellow and black markings
• Build open, umbrella-shaped nests with visible hexagonal cells

🐝 Yellow Jackets
• More compact, stockier bodies
• Bright yellow and black markings
• Shorter legs that generally stay closer to the body while flying
• Often nest underground or in enclosed spaces, such as wall voids

⚠️ Why does it matter? Both can sting when they feel threatened, especially when their nests are disturbed. Identifying the insect can help determine the best approach to managing the problem safely.

Did you know there's a famous temple in India where more than 25,000 rats are considered sacred and protected? 😮

The Karni Mata Temple in Rajasthan, India, is home to thousands of rats that roam freely throughout the temple. But unlike the rodents we typically consider pests, these rats are treated with reverence by devotees!

✨ Here are a few fascinating facts:

🐭 The rats are called kabbas and are believed to be reincarnated members of Karni Mata's family and community.

🥛 Devotees bring offerings of milk, grains, and sweets for the rats, and sharing food touched by them is considered a blessing.

🤍 Spotting one of the temple's rare white rats is considered especially lucky!

It's a fascinating reminder that an animal viewed as a pest in one part of the world can hold deep cultural and religious significance in another.

Did you know mice can leave behind trails of urine and other residues as they travel throughout your home? 😳

While these trails may be nearly impossible to see with the naked eye, under ultraviolet (UV) light, they can become much more visible! 🔦🟣 This can help reveal areas of rodent activity that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Mice often travel along walls, behind appliances, inside cabinets, and through other hidden areas as they search for food and shelter.

🐭 RODENT AWARENESS WEEK: MEET THE MICE!

Did you know there are different types of mice you might encounter in and around your home? This Rodent Awareness Week, we're highlighting two common types: house mice and deer mice! 👀

🐭 House Mice
Typically small, with dusty gray or brown fur, lighter-colored bellies, and relatively large ears. House mice are well adapted to living alongside people and can nest in walls, cabinets, basements, and other sheltered areas.

🐭 Deer Mice
Often have brown or grayish-brown fur, a white or cream-colored underside, and noticeably lighter feet. They're commonly associated with outdoor areas but can enter homes, garages, sheds, and other buildings, especially as temperatures drop.

⚠️ Why should you care? Both types can contaminate food, damage belongings, and leave droppings behind. Deer mice can also carry hantaviruses, so avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings and nesting materials. Follow CDC guidance for safe cleanup.

🏡 How can you help keep mice out?
✅ Seal gaps and openings around your home's exterior.
✅ Store food and pet food in tightly sealed containers.
✅ Keep storage areas tidy and reduce potential nesting spots.

As temperatures drop, mice and rats start looking for what we all want this time of year: warmth, food, and shelter! 🍂 Unfortunately, that can mean unwanted visitors trying to make their way into your home.

🔎 Here are a few ways to help keep rodents out:

🐭 Seal entry points: Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, so seal gaps around pipes, doors, windows, and your home's foundation.

🥫 Store food properly: Keep pantry items and pet food in tightly sealed containers.

🧹 Reduce clutter: Clear away clutter in basements, garages, and storage areas where rodents may hide or nest.

🌿 Keep the exterior tidy: Trim vegetation away from your home and keep firewood stored off the ground and away from the foundation.

💩 Watch for warning signs: Droppings, scratching sounds, gnaw marks, and shredded nesting materials can all indicate rodent activity.

🐛 Pest Spotlight: Indian Meal Moths! 🥜

Think you have moths flying around your kitchen? The source might be hiding in your pantry! 👀

We recently helped a client experiencing Indian Meal Moth activity in her kitchen, and our technician, Wade, tracked down the source: a bag of pecans! As you can see in this video, the larvae had been feeding inside the bag, leaving the pecans shredded over time. 😳

🔎 Did you know? Indian Meal Moth larvae can infest a variety of stored food products, including nuts, cereal, flour, dried fruit, pet food, and birdseed. While the adult moths are often what you notice flying around, it's the larvae that cause the damage!

🏠 How to help prevent an infestation:
✅ Store pantry foods in airtight containers.
✅ Check dry goods, nuts, and pet food for signs of webbing, larvae, or damaged packaging.
✅ Inspect items you've had stored for a while.
✅ Remove and discard any infested food, and thoroughly clean the affected storage area.

If you're noticing small moths flying around your kitchen or pantry, don't ignore them! Identifying the source is key to getting the problem under control.

Did you know jumping spiders can leap up to 50 times their own body length? 😲 These tiny acrobats have incredible eyesight and actively hunt their prey instead of relying on webs to catch it!

👀 With their large forward-facing eyes, jumping spiders are often curious little creatures that seem to watch you as you move!

While they're fascinating to learn about, we know not everyone wants to share their home with eight-legged visitors! 🏡
