Weld size, weld type, sequence, preheat requirements, and inspection criteria are all specified because they directly affect how a connection performs under load.

A weld that is visually smooth but undersized fails a different way than one that is properly penetrated but sequenced incorrectly. Neither failure is acceptable in structural steel. ⚠
