How To Water Your Lawn:

1) Your lawn needs at least 1”-1 ½” of water per week
2) Water deeply 2-3 times per week, rather than daily to provide a deep root system
3) Water as early in the morning
4) If you can’t push a 6” screwdriver into your lawn, you’re not watering enough
5) You will need to water more in the heat, especially if you have a fescue lawn
6) Check lawn sprinklers regularly to be sure you’re getting complete coverage
7) In extreme temperatures (high 90’s and over 100º) for a prolonged time period, you should water lightly daily to cool off the grass. Grass needs more water during the heat because it also uses water as an internal coolant. Daily waterings in the heat should be in addition to your regular deep waterings. If a brown area of grass doesn’t respond to watering, look to a professional for other problems such as fungus like ‘brown patch’

Lawn aerators and dethatchers can damage sprinkler heads and other related irrigation components.

Before you begin using any potentially damaging equipment on your lawn, you should mark every sprinkler head with flags for avoidance.

Underground irrigation lines are typically buried deeper than the aeration equipment is designed to excavate.

Brown patch is a common turf disease that is caused by the Rhizoctonia species fungus. It can develop quickly when temperatures are hot (over 85 degrees) and humid.

The best way to prevent brown patch in your lawn is by following good lawn care practices:

- Use low to moderate levels of nitrogen-based fertilizers with a balanced fertility program
- Avoid high-nitrogen applications when the disease is active
- Irrigate grass early in the morning
- Improve soil drainage
- Reduce thatch

Several days before planting your new seed, water the area to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Push a long screw driver into the ground. If you have minimal resistance, then you have the proper water saturation.

Immediately after your new seed is planted, you will need to water for 5 to 10 minutes to gently moisten the first several inches of soil.

If you’re not receiving any rainfall, you’ll need to water new grass seed twice per day for 5-10 minutes per zone or until the top couple inches of soil are moist.

As your new grass seed grows, you can water deeper and less frequently (this will encourage established grass roots to extend deeply into the soil).

When watering grass seedlings, gradually increase your morning watering sessions over time, while decreasing your evening watering. It can take anywhere between 14 and 28 days for new grass seed to begin to grow.
