Variegated String of Hearts
My favorite plant to propagate and I personally find them to be pretty easy to care for. 🙂 These were all collected from from 5 of 6 plants, trimming back to pot length.
•I only keep the vines that have variegation and snip each set of hearts keeping 1/2” of stem on both ends, then lay them in the soil ensuring the node is touching (butterfly the hearts) starting at the edge of the pot working my way towards the middle.
•Typically I’ll spray the soil a bit before starting to act as a “glue” and when I’m done I fully water using either a spray bottle or squeeze bottle gently so the hearts stay in place until water runs out from the bottom.
•Then I just throw them in a cabinet or humidity box in a warm spot and do absolutely nothing! 😆 I do make sure they stay in a humid condition, even a Ziploc or plastic container will work as long as you’re seeing condensation, you’ll just want to make sure to open it every couple of days. This allows for airflow and also gives you a reminder to check the soil - it needs to stay slightly moist while they’re rooting.
•Sometimes I start seeing new growth within a week but usually around week 2 is when I’ll start monitoring and pull out any that didn’t survive, though I typically only have 2 or 3 that don’t make it. 🙂
Within a month I stop being a helicopter plant mom and start caring for them as I do all of my other established pots - LOTS of light, good airflow (I keep fans going in my plant room), deep watering about every 3 weeks (when they start feeling more pliable, like you can fold them in half like a taco). Sometimes I’ll bottom water, but usually it’s just straight from the top! This is where airflow is key to prevent rot since these are succulent-like plants (but not fully, they do require more frequent watering).
Trim whenever you feel it’s needed! 😆 Using this method makes for a very full pot, which I love, but they can get out of hand pretty quickly, so I don’t let them get longer than 2’ for now. These pots about 6”x 3” and will get slanted hanging shelves on the wall so they’ll hang down in their own designated spot…this is a newer vision so hopefully it turns out exactly as I have in mind. 🥰
