This old show gilt…
If this old show gilt could talk she would tell you her skin wasn’t always this dry and wrinkly.
She would take you back in time to being born on hard wood floors, and almost being sold and forgotten because she wasn’t the bloomy or flashy one in her litter.
She would tell you about all the great sows before her and how she had enormous shoes to fill.
She could take you down memory lane to her first time in the yard, her first time heading to a show, and her first of many banners.
She might explain what it was like to be the underdog, and how much of an attitude it takes to become a champion. You see not every show pig has the fire, the passion, the drive or the heart it takes to not only get to the show ring, but to own it unapologetically.
If this old show gilt could talk she would tell you what life’s like after the banner too. A time filled with uncertainty. After her show career, after the banners have been stashed away, and after the new has worn off. Her skin would start to see less conditioner, and begin to flake, evening walks would cease and her feed ration would look much differently now.
The time would come around for her to be bred and if she only knew the amount guts it took to breed her to our own herd boar. It was take a chance and go for it all, but we knew she was the one to carry that dream.
115 days later she would probably tell you that late cold January night wasn’t a walk in the park… She might tell you she could feel the prayers going up as each new baby made its way into an eager young ladies arms. She would tell you one baby almost didn’t make it, but God had other amazing plans for him. That night was far from glamorous, but she would tell you I never left her side.
Fast forward to the summer as her pigs were blazing their own paths there was clearly a stand out. That one lifeless baby had made his ultimate come back. As his mother before he was a fighter.
This old show gilt has seen a lot over the years. Her skin is dry, her hooves are cracked, and she has lost a lot of hair and weight. The one thing she has never lost is that spark in her eye and her never give up attitude.
You see she’s not just “some old show gilt” she is a prime example of never giving up, beating the odds, and taking a CHANCE on your dreams!
