The client adds a night shift tomorrow. What has actually changed?

More than the hours on the schedule.

A new shift can introduce a different combination of people, site conditions, work activities and safety considerations. Before the added work begins, there are several questions worth revisiting:

👷 Coverage: Are the appropriate qualified safety resources available for the work being performed?
🔁 Handoffs: What does the incoming shift need to know about unfinished work, changing conditions or existing controls?
🌙 Site conditions: How do lighting, access, traffic, visibility and reduced nighttime support affect the work?
🧠 Fatigue: Have work hours and recovery time changed for the crews involved?
⚠️ Hazards: Have the work conditions, risks, or sequence changed and does the team know?

The fatigue question deserves particular attention. NIOSH's updated 2026 guidance identifies night work and extended hours as common contributors to workplace fatigue and notes that fatigue can slow reaction time, reduce attention and concentration, limit short-term memory and impair judgment. Hot environments and physically demanding work can add to that load.

A schedule change creates a useful moment to recheck the safety assumptions attached to the work.

A quiet month in the price index can still hide a very active cost picture underneath.

Construction input prices moved only 0.1% in July, according to ABC's latest analysis of federal producer-price data.

Look deeper and the story becomes much more useful for project teams.

Overall construction input prices were still 7.4% higher than a year earlier. Natural gas jumped 10.4% in July, while crude petroleum fell 11.9%. Different cost components were moving in very different directions.

That is why an estimate needs context around the number.

When design or procurement stretches across several months, teams should understand assumptions such as:

📅 Pricing date and quote validity — How long will today's pricing remain usable?
📈 Escalation — What movement has been carried into future phases?
🚚 Procurement and lead times — When will key materials actually be purchased?
🧱 Scope maturity — Which quantities are established, and where are allowances still carrying uncertainty?
💲 Market exposure — Which trades or materials have greater pricing sensitivity?

The industry's workforce challenge has become increasingly specific.

AGC/NCCER's latest detailed workforce survey found that among firms trying to fill salaried positions:

👷 81% reported difficulty finding superintendents
📊 77% reported difficulty filling estimating roles
🏗️ 76% reported difficulty finding project managers or supervisors

That points to a bigger question than headcount:

Same project. Same crew. New day. What changed?

A pre-task meeting becomes most useful when it reflects the work crews are actually about to perform.

Even when yesterday went exactly as planned, today's conditions may be different. A sequence moves. Another trade enters the work area. Access changes. New equipment arrives. Weather adds another consideration. A task that felt routine yesterday may carry a different exposure today.

James Borghesi has spent more than a decade recruiting people but what stands out most is how much he still cares about the people behind the resumes.
We’re excited to welcome James as Infinite Consulting Corp.’s new Director of Talent Acquisition.

Over the past 12+ years, James has built a career that spans running his own recruiting firm, working in sales strategy, and most recently leading talent acquisition for a heavy civil construction company in New Jersey. For the last several years, his world has revolved around finding the superintendents, project managers, estimators, and engineers who keep construction moving.

He also has a habit of solving problems instead of simply working around them. When repetitive recruiting tasks started taking too much time away from candidate relationships, James taught himself to build software and created his own AI-powered recruiting system using technology to handle more of the busywork so he could spend more time on the conversations that actually matter.

That same curiosity carries outside of work. James is a husband and dad, enjoys working out and reading, has a soft spot for ancient Rome and Greek mythology, and somehow turned building AI apps from a work necessity into a hobby.

We’re glad to have James bringing that mix of construction knowledge, recruiting experience, curiosity, and people-first thinking to Infinite as we continue growing the team behind the work.

As a design develops, the cost picture should become clearer with it.

At SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Infinite provided phased cost estimating for three electrical upgrade packages that included medium-voltage feeders, switchgear, generators, power distribution, cooling towers, and related mechanical, plumbing, and architectural work.

When one activity moves, the effect often reaches much farther than the date shown on the schedule.

A revised sequence can affect labor, equipment, procurement, site access, subcontractor availability, change orders, and the work that follows.

A milestone may still appear on the calendar, while several of the assumptions supporting that milestone have already changed.

This is why cost estimating and CPM scheduling should be reviewed together. The schedule explains when work is expected to happen and how activities depend on one another. Cost information helps the team understand what those changes mean for resources, commitments, and project decisions.
