Well tonight was the night. My friend Karl (and his friend and their family,) had a soft opening for his new restaurant Bida's. We were honored to be among those invited tonight to participate in this milestone. The food was fabulous! The homemade bread was declious. The staff was super friendly. As we all know soft openings are to work out the kinks. Waiting was expected, bumps were anticipated. And I can tell you it was worth the wait. I will of course keep coming back.

I have to say how much I love our little town and that I have the best friends and neighbors ever. Ernie has been working so much with all the storms. On nice days he can't mow our yard because he is out working fixing and repairing new roofs. Reeves Roofing And Repair has been so busy that I usually don't see him on sunny days until well after dark. We took time off this weekend (Sat/Sun) to head to the lake for Mother's day with the kids. On the way home he says " I hope it stays nice long enough for me to mow. I have to sharpen the blades and get the grass at our house and the rental house mowed. I hope it get them done tonight." When we pulled in tonight we were both surprised to see our yard freshly mowed. He quickly got on the phone to find out and Thank which neighbor did it. Turns out it was our own Beau Linebach. Thank you Beau for being such a great neighbor. I'm sure the neighborhood is grateful, not to see knee high grass when they pull in!! THANK YOU!! You are the best!! You don't know how much easier you made our lives with your act of kindness!

What you need to know about your contractors.

There are many things that you should know about the company who you choose to work on your home. With all the spring storms rolling in, "Storm Chasers" roll in as well. These people come in from all over and many are here to take advantage of those who are vaulnerable and still reeling from the damage to their dream homes. These people swoop in like saviours and promise to fix everything for the "low, low, let me give you a discount, I feel bad for you, price of $19.99" In more cases than none most of the time these homeowners have very minimal to no damage. So here are just a few things that you need to know about your roofer (or contractors in general). Know these things BEFORE you hire these people. Don't be taken advantage of.

#1) Is this contractor local?

Just because they hand you a flyer that "says" they are locally owned, doesn't mean that they are local to you. Find out Where they are from. Many of these "Local" contractors aren't even from your state. The reasons to use a true local contractor by far outweigh the reasons to use a "storm chaser". But mainly a local contractor helps your economy and will be available for your if you ever need them again

#2) Is this contractor licensed and insured?

Don't just take their word for it? Make them prove it. Ask to see their liability insurance and their business license. Do they have a license to work in your city? And are they registered with the state? A legitimate contractor will be more than happy to show you his license and insurance. He will also provide you will a list of true local references. Note: A peddlers license is NOT a business license. It is just that, it allows them to peddle their wares in town.

#3) You can't assess strom damage from your car or over the phone.

I've seen and heard about it so many times. These "storm chasers" drive around in their cars or cold call people and tell them they have storm damage. A reputable contractor can NOT assess the damage to your home, especially your roof without actually inspecting it. If someone calls you or approaches you without climbing on your roof and tells you that you have damage. Send them on their way right then. All they want is the commission off the sale. Because that is how these stormers make a living. On commission. The more contracts they get signed the more money they make. And as soon as they get that, they are out of town and headed to the next town.

#4) You can't measure a roof and get an estimate without a ladder. How many of these guys have you seen in town with their fancy CARS or trucks wrapped so that you see their name and number mies away? Now how many do you see with actual ladders? During storm season these ladderless roofers outweigh actual roofers who will take the time to give you a true evaluation and estimate.

#5) Make sure your estimate is accurate and covers everything. Don't get a surprise later with hidded or missed cost. Most of these stormers are just salesmen. They are NOT roofers and most have never even done a repair let alone replaced a roof. These stormers are just out for their next pay check. News Flash Folks they are in such a rush to beat their competitors to the next house that they quickly write up an estimate and have you sign so they can get their money and move on. They get you by saying if you sign today we will give you this special ow low price. But in the end you discover that they didn't include the clean up or dump fees, or even that extra sheeting that you may need. They were in such a rush to lock you in on that low low price and you were eager to sign so that you could get on the list that now your low low price is the high high oh my price. NEVER SIGN ON THE SPOT. Always take time to look it over. A rushed decision is usually a bad decision.

#6) NEVER give them money up front.

This is one the biggest mistakes that people make. They are told that "if you give us X amount of money today we can get started right away." What they get is your money and they head out of town to the next one hit by a spring storm. Will they send a crew your way to begin work? Maybe. But when its been a few weeks and you haven't heard back from them what are you gonna do? Are you going to drive to their LOCAL office in Nebraska or Texas and demand they begin work on your house? If you had a local contractor you would know where he lives and would see him out and about at your kids soccer games or in the grocery store. A local contractor isn't going to take advantage of your situation he has to live in the same town as you and see you constantly.

#7) Do you truly have storm damage?

This is a biggie folks! As a roofer for over 30 years now I've climbed on more roofs than I can count where people belive they have storm damage. In most cases they don't. Some will have dented vents and a few spots that may have very light damage. But nothing that needs replaced. Make sure that your contractor is honest. If he's reputable he will tell you if you don't need a roof. He's not in it for the commission. This is his livlihood. He's not gonna cheat someone that he has to see at church on Sunday or at a school function next week. If he takes advantage of one person in a small town how long will he stay in business?

#8) Using a local, small contractor is going to cost me money? This is FALSE folks. Just because those big companies tell you that they can get better prices than your local small town guys doesn't mean it is true. Your local contractor has worked with their supply company for many years and has established a relationship with these suppliers that gives them better prices. So don't discount your local contractor because you've been told by someone else that their price can't be beaten. Call your local contractor and give them the opportunity to work with you.

This list goes on and on folks. But the bottom line is know who you are working with and know what you are getting. And keep it local.

Today, I saw a post on one of the local pages that a roofing company we calling homeowners and telling them that they had recent wind damage and that the roof needing replacing. Even showing up at their roof telling them they had damage. People please be careful.
Sadly this happens a lot. In the roofing business we call them "storm chasers." Many fly by night companies from out of state , set up shop in areas where there may have recently been high winds, hail, or storm damage. Sadly they give honest roofers Like us, "Reeves Roofing and Repair" a bad name. They are usually pushy, and sometimes even show up on your property uninvited. We have had customers tell us, that they have found people on their roof without their knowledge. They have been known to tell people they have severe storm damage when they really have none. They sadlly will promise all kinds of things, even undercutting your local small town roofer. Then when it is time to pay your bill you will find it iss more because they magically found more damage. Then when your roof leaks after they leave or the shingles blow off and you call them to come back to repair it, guess what? They have left town and you are on your own. So you now call the local roofer who you didn't take his estimate or his word on your damage to fix what they messed up. I promise you this happens a lot. We get so many calls to repair a new roof that we didn't do, because of "storm chasers" who didn't know what they were doing. So please be very cautious. Most roofers will not call you or randomly stop to tell you that you have roof damage. Hopefully you will call your local, well established, hometown roofer who you can trust to be there if and when you need him.
