It’s finally here—the first issue of The Blackbird Creative magazine.

The Collected Modern Farmhouse is about creating a beautiful home without believing everything has to be replaced. Inside, I’m sharing how thoughtful changes—painted cabinetry, layered lighting, architectural trim, refinished furniture and a connected color palette—completely transformed one familiar space.

This room didn’t just need new finishes—it needed a better plan.

When I first walked into the space, the TV was tucked into the far-right corner beside the bay window. My client was understandably hesitant when I suggested moving it to the opposite wall, but she now absolutely loves how naturally the room flows.

Moving the TV gave us the opportunity to turn the fireplace wall into the focal point I knew this room needed—something that immediately draws your eye the moment you walk in.

We removed the texture from the ceilings, installed new flooring, and made thoughtful furniture choices that brought warmth, comfort, and function into the room. One of my favorite decisions was choosing four smaller ottomans instead of one oversized piece. They can sit together like a large coffee table or be pulled apart and used throughout the room whenever extra seating or a place to put your feet is needed.

That’s what thoughtful design is all about: creating a beautiful room that also works for the way a family actually lives.

🖤 LAST CALL FOR CABINET SPRAYING THIS YEAR!

If you’ve been thinking about having your cabinets painted, now is the time to get on The Blackbird Creative’s schedule!

Cabinet spraying wraps up at the end of October, weather permitting. I won’t be taking on sprayed cabinet projects during the winter months—those will resume in spring 2027.

A beautiful new color and a smooth sprayed finish can completely change the feel of your kitchen while keeping the cabinets you already have.

Same wall. Completely different purpose. 🖤

Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t about adding more—it’s about rethinking how the room is being used.

We moved the TV from the opposite side of the room and turned what was once just a blank wall into the feature of the entire space. Shiplap, a floating wood mantel, electric fireplace, and a much more intentional layout completely changed the way this room looks and feels.

And THAT is my favorite part of design—seeing potential in a space that was there all along.

Same house. Same wall. Whole new vibe.

Nothing in Karen’s home was chosen in isolation.

Every color, texture and finish was selected to create one continuous story from room to room. Alabaster brings warmth and brightness, while Gossamer Veil creates a soft neutral foundation. Dorian Gray cabinetry adds depth, and Urbane Bronze gives the fireplace the visual weight it deserves.

Warm oak flooring, camel leather and natural rattan bring warmth. Linen, white quartz and tumbled stone add softness and texture, while deep green introduces an organic contrast.

The result is a home that feels warm, organic and collected—because every decision was made with the entire home in mind.

The Blackbird Creative will be booking cabinet-painting projects from now through October—or for as long as the warm weather safely permits. Because cabinet doors are professionally sprayed in my workshop, I will pause cabinet painting during the cold winter months and resume in Spring 2027.
