That's how Zach McAndrew sums up his job at Eramo & Sons.

He showed up straight out of high school without knowing a thing about site work. He learned elevations on the job, asked questions when he needed to, and worked his way from top man to pipe layer to loader operator in five years.

He's not done climbing.

Four guys. Four different starting points. One crew.

Chris Massey showed up two days after high school graduation, green as could be. He started as a laborer and grade checker. Twenty-one years later, he runs a dirt crew.
"What keeps me here is it just feels like a family."

Bob Bollinger came over from an oil rig in 2007, when John Eramo & Sons was the only one hiring. Almost 20 years later, he's running a hoe on mainline sewer.
"I've gotten a raise every year I've been here. Every year."

Zach McAndrew came straight out of high school with no site experience. In five years he went from top man to pipe layer to loader operator.
"It pays well. You're working hard. It's honest work."

John Buckenrauch was remodeling houses a little over a year ago. A buddy on our pipe crew told him to give us a shot. Since then he's gone from haul truck to tractor work to checking grade on streets.
"You're always going to be learning something. Some guys have been out here their whole lives, and they're still learning every day."

None of them walked in with a degree or years of equipment experience. They learned on the job, next to people who'd been doing it for decades, and they moved up because the room was there.

Chris put it plainly: "There's lots of opportunities to move up right now. We need guys willing to move up."

In 2007, work was slow everywhere. Eramo & Sons was the only one hiring, so Bob Bollinger gave it a shot.

Almost 20 years later, he's still here, running a hoe on mainline sewer work and putting pipe in on grade with a crew that actually works together.

"I've gotten a raise every year I've been here. Every year."

Two days out of high school. 21 years later, he's running the crew.

Chris Massey started at John Eramo & Sons as a laborer and grade checker with no experience. In his words, he was "green as could be." He spent his early days in the foreman's truck next to his uncle, studying plans and learning everything he could.

"I went from basically a grade checker to a foreman."

Today Massey runs a dirt crew. They bring in fill, raise the ground, then dry, compact and grade the site so the pipe crew can come in. Ask him why he's stayed two decades and he won't say the equipment.

"What keeps me here is it just feels like a family. I've worked with most of these guys for 15, 20 years."

A lot of our experienced crew is getting close to retirement, so there's real room to move up right now.

"There's lots of opportunities to move up right now... we need guys willing to move up."

Straight out of high school. Now running a loader.

Zach McAndrew started with John Eramo & Sons right out of high school. Five years in, he's worked his way from top man, to pipe layer, to loader operator, and he's not done climbing.

“Just coming out here to start, you don't know anything. So you're learning elevations, and if you need help, you ask for it, and everybody's always willing to help you out.”

He even left for a while for another opportunity. It didn't work out, and when he decided to come back, the crew welcomed him with open arms.

“It pays well. You're working hard. It's honest work.”
