20 years. One team. Here's why Bob stayed.

Bob Bollinger has been running a hoe for John Eramo & Sons for 20 years, on and off. Before that, he worked an oil rig, until the price of oil dropped and the drilling stopped. He worked at a couple other companies doing the same kind of work after that. Then in 2007, when work was slow everywhere, John Eramo & Sons was the only one hiring. He gave it a shot.

“They started me out decent wage, and they take care of me.”

Now Bob runs a hoe on mainline sewer work, putting in underground piping on grade, in the right spot, with a crew that actually works together.

“I've gotten a raise every year I've been here. Every year. And they give better bonuses than any place I've ever worked.”

Seven years ago, Brandon Milke started at John Eramo & Sons as a top man: no equipment experience, just willing to learn the tools and the lay of the land.

Today he's a backfill operator on our Utility Crew, and he's already looking at the next step up.

“This is a great career to get started in. Eramo specifically will take care of you. You're not just another number here,” he says.

His day starts with equipment checks: dozer, hoe, everything. From there it's making sure every job site is level, every ditch is properly backfilled, and nothing gets left with a low spot. It's the kind of detail work that keeps a site right long after the crew has moved on.

Brandon sums up the job better than we could: “If you've ever played in a sandbox as a child, Tonka toys, all that kind of stuff, it's basically the same thing out here. Your toys are just a little bit bigger.”

Four roles in seven years, and he's still moving up. That's what a real career path looks like.

Three years ago Zach had never run a piece of equipment in his life. He started as a rock truck driver and worked up from there.

Today he runs the dozer: cutting streets, building paths, and bringing the ground to grade so a whole neighborhood drains right and the utilities have somewhere to go.
"They teach you if you’re green. Even if you have experience, they’ll let you come in, they’ll give you a shot."

Everyone starts somewhere.

Zach started here with no experience on equipment. None.

"My dad actually was the one that got me on here and they hired me on. I started off as a rock truck driver. Did the basic stuff, was green, never had any experience, and slowly worked my way up the past three years."

Three years later he runs the dozer.

That machine is where a neighborhood actually begins. Before a foundation goes in, before a single utility gets laid, somebody has to bring the ground to grade so the water drains the right direction and the pipe has somewhere to go. That is the dozer.

"A GPS in a dozer is a very important piece of equipment. We use it to know what elevations we need to be at. We use them to cut our streets, to do anything, paths. From where a neighborhood starts to where a neighborhood ends, the dozer’s a big key point in the job."

The screen shows him the engineered design of the finished site and tells him exactly where the ground is high and where it is low. He decides what to do about it. That is a real skill, and he learned it here.

Three years in, and he’s running the Challenger scraper: a machine that self-loads and unloads on its own. He also runs the sheep foot and the 815 for compacting, and the smooth drum for finishing. Right now he’s learning the GPS dozer, reading the site for where it needs cut and where it needs fill.

His take on the dozer: "You’ve got to pay attention a lot, but after you get the hang of it, piece of cake."

A friend told Lexies how the industry worked and he figured he’d fit running heavy equipment. Three years later, he says he’d like to retire here. Good place, good people.

Meet Ashton, pipe layer.

He’s 22 and going on two years with us. Out on the Delaware job, he’s down in the trench laying sanitary, storm, and water line, getting every foot on grade so the water flows right. Everyone else on the crew feeds into what he does.

Ashton came out of high school not knowing if it was college or work. A few friends were already out here, so he gave it a shot. His advice to anyone in that spot: "It starts out paying good, you work your butt off, you get up there, and it’s totally worth it."

Pipe layers who know the work often become foremen, and that’s exactly where Ashton is headed. He’s learning from his foreman now to run a crew of his own down the road.

On safety, he keeps it simple: if it’s not safe, it’s a no-go. We don’t do it.
