Mold remediation fads come and go, but doing the work right means mold removal. An increasing amount of products are being used as "spray and pray" solutions to mold growth in violation of the national guidelines.

The IICRC S520 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation states "Physically removing mold contamination is the primary means of remediation. Mold Contamination should be physically removed from the structure, systems and contents." Attempts to kill or inhibit mold growth without proper source removal are not adequate.

Don't let unqualified people put you at risk. Unqualified people are testing and drawing conclusions about mold issues at the risk of the health and finances of homeowners and homebuyers.

Mold can cause health effects, and there are many types of mold that can cause issues from allergies to potentially much more serious health issues. One surface sample taken by an unqualified person regarding mold just to "see if it is TOXIC BLACK mold" can expose homeowners and homebuyers to both health and financial risk.

Even mold that is not "toxic black mold" can be a health concern. The Center for Disease Control states there is "sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition." Regardless of the type of mold, it can make people sick.

Mold is also a financial liability. If you buy a home that that has mold that is not "toxic black mold" that has not been removed following national guidelines, you are buying someone else's problem. What happens when you go
to sell the home? Will buyers buy a home with mold? What about the causes of mold growth? Mold grows in a home due to moisture. Until you fix the water issue, the mold issue will get worse, and "toxic molds" that require higher moisture levels or more time may show up in the future.
