Not necessarily plumbing related, but a great (and cheap!) life hack if you have older windows like we did a few years ago. If you have single pane windows, or large windows like this one, they suck a lot of the heat from your home. Use bubble wrap to insulate them!! Just spray the window with water and put the bubble wrap on the inside of the window with the bubbles facing the window. The smooth side should be toward you. This will more than double the R value of the window. It ain't pretty, but it works!!

How’s your Christmas Eve going so far? 😂 Water leaks don’t know it’s a holiday…

Here’s your friendly late night reminder… It’s supposed to be below freezing tonight and the next two nights.
Leave your water dripping on the cold side of the faucet farthest from your water main
Check your antifreeze level in your vehicle
Disconnect and drain all outside garden hoses
Close up the vents on your crawl space
Check on your elderly neighbors
Make sure outside pets have a warm house, food, and water
And as always, give us a call if you need help with preventative measures or if you find yourself in a messy situation with frozen pipes.

As always when the weather starts to reach below freezing, here’s some advice from a plumber’s wife:

* Leave the faucet furthest away from your water main dripping from the cold side (hot side will just drain your hot water heater). Even during the day if you aren’t going to be home.
* If you aren’t able to insulate pipes at least put a heat tape or heat lamp near where your main comes up out of the ground. Also where your sewer main goes out.
* Check the antifreeze in your vehicle. Nobody wants to pay for a new radiator right at Christmas. Don’t assume that the guy that changes your oil put it in there for you, check for yourself.
* Outside hose bibs should be drained and shut off to prevent lines from bursting. Insulate if possible.
* Fill water/soda bottles with very strong salt water and seal tight. Add these to outside livestock/pets water containers to keep the water from freezing. I added 2-20oz water bottles to a 5 gallon bucket that the chickens drank from and it never froze.
* Don’t use blankets for outside animals, once they get wet, they freeze solid. Use straw instead if animals aren’t able to be brought inside.
* Check on your elderly neighbors. You might be the only person who does.
* Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle. Even if you never use it, it’s worth the peace of mind knowing it’s there.
* Lastly, consider having an alternative heat and cooking source. Even small cans of sterno are able to heat up soup. Think about it now and you don’t have to stress later when the power goes out.

You have a few days this weekend to get your house winter ready before the cold air invades again. A few things you can do to prevent frozen pipes:

1. Disconnect garden hoses.
2. Insulate your pipes.
3. Seal any air leaks.
4. Open doors and cabinets.
5. Let faucets drip.
6. Keep a consistent temperature.

If you need a hand getting ready for Old Man Winter, give us a call! 🥶
