In late August of 2023 a series of summer thunderstorms rolled through southern Oregon
leaving wildfires in their wake due to lightning strikes. Crews worked quickly to get the
fire contained and led to some early successes, but wind shifts, and low humidity allowed
the fire to burn to its max extent of 22,170 acres of wilderness. The fire decimated Grassy
K**b Wilderness Area and the surrounding areas of northern Curry County.

We partnered with Curry County SWCD to help restore the area and survey and invasive plants growth that has sprouted in the last few months since the fire was finally extinguished. The area that we will be working in the most is Grassy K**b Wilderness, an area composed on around 18,000 acres first designated in 1984. These surveys will be providing valuable data to the county for potential future treatments as well as a first hand look on initial recovery from the fire.

This is one of our furthest sites, nearly 6 hours from home, but, we're always excited to extend our boundaries. We had the pleasure to work with Curry County SWCD helping to restore this area and we're looking forward to updating you on the progress.

🚨Site update!🚨

Young's Creek is an area we have planted in the past, and now the department
of transportation along with state ecologists have found funding to recreate the hydrology to make it better for wildlife. Today we're looking at the results of our hard work.

The dams have held up and are working effectively. The long term goal of these dams is to make an attractive beaver environment to slow down stream channelization and promote a healthy floodplain habitat.

The first two photos show the results we've gotten after installation of the dams. The last two photos show where it all started and the work we did.

When beavers build dams across streams, they naturally disperse and hold water on the land longer, which supports more plants and creates habitats like ponds and meadows. Restored ecosystems provide better places to live for aquatic species—like salmon and trout—and land creatures—like sage grouse and mule deer. The dams also create more fresh drinking water and better grazing land for cattle, and they make the landscape more resilient to fire and drought.

It's exciting to be part of such a large project. We're excited for more projects like this in the future, and to see how this site continues to grow.

Go back a few posts to see when we first posted about Young's Creek to see how much it's changed!

Site update: Bareroot season has begun in Steigerwald!
This week teams were out planting thousands of bareroot plants in several different locations of Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine), Spirea douglasii (Spirea), Sambucus racemosa (red elderberry), and Berberis aquifolium (tall Oregon Grape) are some of the plants we've been putting in the ground.

Keep an eye out along the trails to see if you can spot all our hard work. Give us a wave if you're lucky enough to see us in the field.

Planting season has begun, and we kicked it off with a bang at Broadmoor. Between 3 teams, various trainers, and project staff, nearly 50,000 plants were put in over a week. Plants like Spirea Douglasii, Physocarpus Capitatus, Albus Rubra, and a variety of Willows were all planted inside the basin of what once used to be a golf course. A LOT of hard work has been put into this site, and it shows.

Plant talks are a common occurrence and a crucial part of our days. As the winter starts to take hold, plants can easily be mistaken as dead sticks. Our trainers often attend teams in the field to help identify and to give tips on how to identify winter twig ID. Looking for bud scars, leaf growth, bark structure, and ecology as identifying factors. We don't solely rely on our trainers, though. We encourage our teams to take time out of the day to have these discussions and to quiz and teach each other in the field. A knowledgeable team is a strong team.

Bonus points if you can guess what plant we're studying.

At Ash Creek we encourage not just our teams, but, everyone to get out and volunteer.  It allows us as a company to connect with  our communities, it contributes our skills to beautiful areas, we get to bond as coworkers/colleagues, and we get to spend our time at places that make us happy.

Thank you to for the opportunity to volunteer. With Friends of Trees we helped to plant plugs of native sedges in Gaston, OR in Wapato Lake National Wildlife Refuge, ancestral land of the Atfalat-i Kalapuya people of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, the nation's newest wildlife refuge.

Our teams have been hard at work hand pulling at Hess Creek this week!

We've had great success hand pulling previously at Hess Creek and we hope to continue that this year. Hand pulling allows us to clear out any ivy that may be smothering out any indigenous plants. This also allows us to create a buffer away from any plants in case we need to go and spray in these areas.

Field Teams are out rescuing some native plants today! This 10-acre private property was logged a few years ago and since then an abundance of different native plant species have sprouted up. Since the site requires the removal of native and non-native competing plants, we are rescuing as many natives as possible to give them a new life at our Native Plant Nursery. Our crews went in and cut away the Himalayan Blackberry overtaking the site in order to access the natives throughout the site. We even brought in a tractor and mini excavator to help out! Rescued plants from this site include Red Alder, Big Leaf Maple, Sword Fern, Solomon’s Seal, Goldenrod, Red Flowering Currant, Pearly Everlasting, Oregon Grape, Red Huckleberry, Slough Sedge, and Salal. If you’re interested in any of these species, check out our nursery’s stock list on www.ashcreekforestry.com so you can give these great plants a new home!
