Plant of the week!!

Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis)

The uses for lavender are abundant and have been used since the ancient Egyptians. Lavender is one of the most versatile plants being used for medical, culinary, and ornamental purposes. Being part of the mint family, lavender has lived up to its full potential. The scent of lavender has a calming effect and can reduce cortisol and blood pressure. Lavender can be rubbed on an insect bite to reduce inflammation. Many insects do not like the scent of lavender so its great to keep on a patio or outside living area. Lavender oil is the only essential oil that still contains antioxidants and it becomes more potent over time.

Grow tips
- Full sun(6+ hours direct sun/day)
- Well-draining soil with ph level of 6.5-7.0
-Plant in early spring or fall
-Prune annually in late summer
-Excellent companion plant to cabbage, basil, mint, and rosemary
-Maintain 1" of water once a week
-Feed with a slow release fertilizer

Plant of the Week!
Our plant of the week is the American Crabapple (Malus coronaria) also known as sweet crabapple or wild crabapple. These trees are a member of the rose family and are found in every state in the U.S.. Crabapples are often planted as ornamentals and provide a beautiful long lasting bloom. Often used in smaller landscapes as they do not grow too large, and are low maintenance. Crabapples often develop water sprouts (shoots that grow up from the branches) and suckers that grow from the base. These growths should be removed along with any dead or diseased branches.
Tips:
Always disinfect your pruners before and after pruning a tree. Diseases can be transferred by pruning one tree and using the same pruners on another.
If you decide to make a hard prune on a fruiting tree make sure your timing is right. Also use the 30% or less rule. If you remove more than 30% of branches from the tree in one year you will cause major stress on your tree.
