Contrary to rumors I've heard around town, Jim Malin's Plumbing & Heating is not out, or going out of business. After 38 years on Valley Rd. in Hockessin, we had to relocate. We are now at 5988 Limestone Rd. and ready to attend to all your plumbing, well water systems, water treatment and hot water heating system's needs. After hearing the rumor a few times, I thought it necessary to set the record straight.
Thank You, Jim Malin

The obvious benefit of a solar water heater is reducing the amount of electricity or gas you use to heat water in your home. Depending the amount of sun where you live, a solar water heat can reduce the amount of energy you use to heat your water by 50 to 90 percent.

In older neighborhoods, sewer lines can be a concern, because homeowners are responsible for the pipe that runs from the house to the street. Made of cast iron, clay or wood fiber, old sewer pipes are more likely to be crushed, cracked, corroded or blocked.

Can you guess how much of the water flowing into your home is used to clean laundry? If you guessed nearly 22 percent, you're right. For extra points, what costs you more, the water used to clean your laundry, or the energy used to heat that water? If you guessed heating the water is more expensive than the water itself, you're right again.

Did you know that the toilets in your home account for about 30 percent of your yearly water usage, according to experts? Showers take up about 35 percent and the washing machine uses about 20 percent. With low flow toilets, you can make a huge dent in your yearly water bill.

For those applications where run-off needs to be controlled, we have silt basin systems available to collect the run-off so fines and silt can settle, be contained, then properly disposed. We also have piping available for pipe inlet sediment control.

When you have a clogged pipe, it's possible the problem is nothing more than a clump of hair and grease that can be removed with a high-pressure hose. However, a plumber also can take advantage of equipment such as a mini-camera to determine if the pipe in question is clogged or broken.

When installing plumbing vents in buildings or homes, makes sure the pipe extends well-above the roofline, especially in areas where snow is possible. If it is too low, snow (and other debris) accumulations can clog the vent.

Toilet clogs are just a sad fact of life that we all have to deal with sometimes. Just like the origins of the first toilet, the exact history of the toilet plunger remains unknown. It’s likely that the modern day plunger was invented around the 1850s, the same time as the invention of the suction cup.
