We just put the finishing touches on this 1,400 sq. ft. transformation, and I’ll be honest—I almost didn't want to leave.
Most people think of a basement as a place to store old boxes. But for this family, it’s now the "New First Floor." We took a dark, cold concrete shell and turned it into a high-end sanctuary.

But the real beauty is what you can’t see. This basement is built with 20-gauge steel studs and closed-cell spray foam, meaning it will stay dry, warm, and healthy for the next twenty years.

If a contractor tells you they can "just lay the floor" because the concrete looks dry... you are talking to the wrong person.

Concrete "looks" dry even when it is breathing out gallons of moisture v***r every single day. If you lay high-end flooring directly over a slab without a professional test, those expensive planks will buckle, gap, or grow mildew underneath within a year.

Most generalist contractors skip the "invisible" science because it takes specialized tools and professional training. They want to get the floor down and get out of your house.

I’m Joe Chavis, and I don’t believe in "good enough." Every project I take on follows my 10-Point Protocol, starting with a professional moisture v***r test. I build sanctuaries that are as healthy as they are beautiful. This can be removed.
Before you sign a contract with a generalist who doesn't understand the science of an underground room, see the industry secrets they aren't telling you.

Your home is too valuable for a "standard" build that wasn't designed for a basement. Let’s sit down for an Initial Design Meeting and make sure your project is done right the first time.

Is your "new" basement actually a mold museum in the making?

Most contractors use the same "pink fluffy" insulation in a basement that they use in an upstairs bedroom. It’s cheap, it’s fast, and in an underground room, it’s a massive mistake. Fiberglass acts like a giant sponge for moisture. Once it gets damp behind your drywall, it stays damp—leading to rot and that "musty" smell that never goes away.

I’m Joe Chavis, and I refuse to follow that industry standard.

At Chavis Building, I have a hard stance: We use foam board. Why? Because I refuse to build a room that fails in three years. While the other guys are building for the final check, I’m building to protect your home for the next twenty years.

Don't let a "low bid" or a generalist contractor gamble with your family's health. I wrote a guide to the 3 biggest myths other builders tell you—and how to ensure your investment is actually protected.

"How long is this actually going to take?"

It’s the second most common question I get at Chavis Building. But what people are usually asking is: "How long until my house feels complete?"

From the moment we finalize your design to the moment you move your furniture in, you are looking at a 12-to-16 week transformation.

Weeks 1–4: We handle the science (moisture tests and airflow math).
Weeks 5–10: We build the "Invisible" protection (steel studs and spray foam).
Weeks 11–16: We deliver the artisan finish (flooring, cabinetry, and light).

Sixteen weeks might feel like a long time, but compared to the five years most people spend "thinking about it," it’s a blink of an eye. You can’t buy back the time you’ve already lost, but you can decide exactly when the "After" version of your life begins.

Check out my latest article for a deep dive into the timeline of a professional remodel—and why starting today is the biggest win for your home’s equity.

P.S. I have two openings for Initial Design Meetings this week. If you're ready to cross the bridge from "storage zone" to "sanctuary," let's talk.

Close your eyes and imagine it’s a Friday night, exactly 16 weeks from today.

You walk down the stairs, but you aren't looking for a flashlight or moving storage bins out of the way. Instead, you step into your own private resort. The lighting is soft, the air is fresh, and it’s perfectly quiet because we built the "guts" of the room to block out the noise from the rest of the house.

Whether it's a movie with the kids, a workout in your private gym, or a quiet drink at your new bar—this is the "New First Floor" of your life.

The only thing standing between you and that feeling is a 16-week clock.

I’m Joe Chavis, and I specialize in turning dark, unused spaces into high-performance sanctuaries. I wrote a guide to show you exactly how that 12-to-16 week journey works and what you can expect when you decide to finally "start the clock" on your home.
