Two weeks between these two photos 🤩

Bare strip of dirt along the front, now three burgundy cordyline anchoring the middle with low shrubs stepped out either side and gold shell rock over the top.

See that curve on the bed edge? That's the whole trick. A straight line against a straight house reads like a hedge row. One good sweeping curve and the entire front softens up.

Our rule on jobs: fabric and drip line go in before a single plant does. That's why this still looks like this in August instead of crisping out by the driveway.

Tight back yard, big mossy oak, no room for a bucket truck 🌴

This is where the spider lift earns its keep. Tracks in through the side gate, spreads those outriggers on the grass, and puts our guy right up in the canopy without a truck ever touching the lawn.

That oak is loaded with Spanish moss and deadwood sitting over the roof. Every piece comes down on a rope, controlled, in sections.

Our rule on jobs: if we can't rig it and lower it, we don't cut it.

Y'all asked where that downspout actually goes 👇

Here's the whole run. Basin at the house, solid pipe through the trench, and out to daylight well away from the slab.

That teal pipe is the main line. It gets pitched so the whole thing drains itself instead of holding water and silting up. Trench gets backfilled and packed, sod goes back over it, and in a month you'd never know we were here.

Our rule on jobs: if you can still see where we dug six weeks later, somebody rushed the backfill.

This is where your gutters should be going 👇

That downspout used to dump straight onto the slab. Every storm, all that roof water sitting in the narrow strip between the patio and the walkway with nowhere to go.

Now it elbows right into a catch basin and runs underground and away. The second pipe coming in from the left picks up whatever sheets off the slab.

A Florida roof throws a shocking amount of water in one afternoon storm! Dumping it at the foundation is how you get settling, stained stucco and a side yard that never dries.

Our rule on jobs: roof water goes fifteen feet from the house, minimum.

Circle drives are a whole different animal 🤩

This one wraps the entire front of the house, so we ran shell rock the full width and left a planted island in the middle to break it up. That mound of green is groundcover. It'll spill over the rock edge by spring.

The boulder anchors it, and those low bronze lights along the edge do the rest. At night that island is the first thing you see coming down the street.

Our rule on jobs: when the driveway is the biggest thing in the front yard, give the eye somewhere to land.

That tree looked perfectly healthy from the street 😳

Look at the cut face. That orange ring is the only solid wood left, maybe three inches of it. Everything in the middle is black, hollow and full of fungus!

Here's what gets people. A tree moves water through a thin layer just under the bark, so the canopy can be green and full while the inside has already rotted out from under it. Then we get one good blow in September and it snaps at the base.

Our rule on jobs: green leaves tell you a tree is alive. They tell you nothing about whether it's safe.

Monday morning, and this one's getting a whole new front bed 🌱

Pots staged along the wall, edging in, soil turned. Those burgundy cordyline go down the middle and everything steps down from there.

See that coil of black tubing on the grass? That's drip line, and it goes in under the fabric before a single plant does. It's the whole difference between a bed that still looks good next August and one that's crispy by the driveway!

Our rule on jobs: the stuff you'll never see again once we're finished is the stuff that decides whether it lasts.

Two days after the rain stopped and there's still standing water in the back yard.

That's not a rain problem. That's a grade problem.

Your lot was built to drain somewhere. A swale, a pond, the street. Then over the years something got in the way. A bed built up too high. A new patio. Fill trapped along a fence line.

Now your yard is where the whole block's water ends up.

We come look while it's still wet. It's the only time you can actually see where the water wants to go.

Paying attention to all details of your landscape plan is sooo very important! Small details can lead to HUGE expenses 😱 and terrible consequences! Had this not been discovered it not only would have washed out the wall, pavers and ac unit but it was headed under the foundation of the house. We have had to have a 10 story condominium lifted and leveled because of an unknown water leak 😨
