🛢️ Stop Grease Clogs – Keep Your Pipes Flowing!

A Quick Guide to Grease Disposal

❌ What NOT to Do:

Don’t pour cooking grease, oil, or fat down the sink or garbage disposal.

Don’t rinse greasy pans with hot water — grease may seem to wash away, but it hardens in your pipes.

Don’t flush grease down the toilet — it harms plumbing and the city sewer system.

✅ What TO Do Instead:

✅ Let grease cool, then scrape it into a container (like a jar or can) and throw it in the trash.

✅ Wipe pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing to remove excess grease.

✅ Use a grease trap or strainer in your sink to catch solids before they go down the drain.

✅ Educate everyone in your household or workplace — grease clogs cost time and money!

💡 Why It Matters:

Grease builds up over time, blocking pipes and causing backups.

Grease clogs lead to expensive plumbing repairs and sewer overflows.

In cities, grease forms massive “fatbergs” that cost millions to remove.

How a P-Trap Works

The P-trap is the curved section of pipe you see under sinks—and it's not just there to make your life harder during a clog!

Here’s what it does:

Traps water in the curve to create a seal.

That water blocks sewer gases from rising back up into your home.

It also catches small debris—like rings or earrings—that accidentally go down the drain.

Quick Tips:

If you smell something funky from a rarely used sink or tub, the P-trap may have dried out. Run water through it to refill the seal.

If your sink is draining slowly, the P-trap may be partially clogged and can often be cleared by unscrewing it and cleaning it out (put a bucket underneath first!).

The most common cause of plumbing backups in homes is a clog in the main sewer line, often caused by tree roots, grease buildup, or flushing non-flushable items (like wipes or paper towels).

Pro tip: If multiple drains (like toilets, sinks, and tubs) are backing up at once, it’s likely a main line issue — not just a single fixture. In that case, stop using water and call a licensed plumber immediately to avoid a messy (and expensive) sewage backup.

Only flush the 3 P’s: p*e, p**p, and (toilet) paper.
Even items labeled “flushable” (like wipes) often don’t break down properly and can build up in your pipes, leading to clogs and sewer backups.

Bonus tips:
Grease goes in the trash, not the drain. Pouring grease down the sink, even with hot water, can cause solid buildup over time.
