We have been hard at work between jobs getting the nursery in shape. We just wanted to remind people we are more than a landscape and lawn care company. We are a licensed nursery that specializes in natives, an environmental advocate, conservationist and preservationist. Our mission is to create the functioning landscape you desire through environmentally conscious practices and design.

In the last year we have been asked to lay rubber mulch, use certain herbicides or work in areas that were just recently treated with Roundup. As a small business owner you want to please the customer and tell them yes, but sometimes you have to think about what separates you from others, what pillars your company stands on. We politely declined in all of these instances and told them that’s not who we are or what we believe in and why. We’re very thankful every customer responded in an understanding and very polite manner.

Moral of the story is just because you’re in a certain field of work doesn’t mean you need to resort to outdated or harmful practices that were made a norm. Being upfront and standing your ground with customers in a respectful manner can go a long way to better spread awareness and make a change. Finally stay true to who you are and what makes you different, don’t be afraid to go against the grain and fight for what you believe is right. We can all leave this world better than we left it with a little encouragement. Happy Friday everyone!

It was an honor and great experience to be able to speak at 1 Million Cups Dubuque last week on Earth Day. I was thrilled the crowd was so intrigued to learn how native plants are beneficial for the environment and their home landscape. The questions I received were wonderful.
