What if the people who use a space help design it?

That's exactly what happened when AHL sat down with students at Hanalani Schools in Mililani, O'ahu, for a collaborative design charrette. As part of the programming and conceptual design phase for campus improvements—including a new Innovation Lab, STEAM classrooms, and a future Innovation & Arts Center—our team invited students to step into the role of designer.

Led by Director of Design Lester Ng, alongside Kevin Raley, Monica Roh, and Jing Zheng, students sketched ideas, pinned up concepts, and shared how they learn, create, and connect. Architecture students from University of Hawaii at Manoa also joined in as externs, getting a firsthand look at how collaborative, client-centered design actually works.

The result? Real insights that are now shaping design decisions from flexible makerspaces to informal gathering spaces and the preservation of the campus lawn.

"Engaging students at this stage grounds the project in real experience. It challenges our assumptions and helps us create spaces that are not only functional, but genuinely supportive of how students live and learn every day," said Senior Associate Kevin Raley.

The most meaningful spaces aren't just designed for people. They're designed with them.

Le Jardin Academy welcomed students back this spring semester with a new home for creativity — the Arts & Innovation Center (AIC), now open on campus. 🎨🤖

As Design Architect and Architect of Record, AHL crafted a 15,150 sq ft facility that brings together Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Design, and Robotics under one roof — with flexible classrooms, collaborative spaces, and a central gallery where students can connect and showcase their work. Every design decision was intentional — from placing the building to follow the natural shape of the land and preserve open play areas, to orienting it to buffer prevailing winds. The signature split roof form is symbolic of an open mind and Le Jardin Academy’s spirit of discovery.

Guided by Le Jardin Academy’s commitment to Innovate for Positive Change, our design weaves a narrative of discovery and impact for students, teachers, and the broader educational community. In addition to supporting student programs, the Arts & Innovation Center is envisioned as a hub for community workshops, partnerships, and lifelong learning opportunities, welcoming community members and partners to collaborate alongside students.

Congratulations to Le Jardin Academy and the entire project team — we can't wait to see what students create in this space.

We’re excited to share that Nāulu has been recognized with the 2026 CoStar Impact Award for Multifamily Development of the Year in Hawaiʻi.

In Hawaiʻi, where quality, long-term affordable housing remains an urgent need, this recognition reflects the power of thoughtful design, strong public-private partnerships, and a shared commitment to community.

Located in the Halawa Transit-Oriented Development corridor of ʻAiea, Nāulu is a 302-unit affordable housing community that supports working families, seniors, and kūpuna with homes near jobs, schools, transit, and essential services.

As the design architect, AHL is honored to have contributed to a development that demonstrates what is possible when planning, financing, design, and collaboration align around the long-term needs of Hawaiʻi’s communities.

Mahalo to our project partners:
• Pacific Development Group
• Nordic PCL Construction, Inc.
• Indigo Real Estate

“Having access to all the world, all the time, at our fingertips — I think this brings us back to what’s meaningful, and to truly be part of something.”

That unfiltered notion perfectly summarizes our most recent event featuring a multigenerational panel of seasoned leaders and emerging voices to talk time, talent, and treasure.

We posed questions like: What does the future of giving back actually look like — and who’s responsible for shaping it?

Answer: It looks like accessibility, authenticity, sustainability. Values-driven leadership across generations.

Missed it or want to rewatch? The full conversation is at our link in bio — along with how to stay connected on future events. Hope to see you at the next one!

“Opportunities come in all shapes and forms… sometimes you don’t know which one is gonna be THE one. Take a chance.”

WIC Week in Hawaiʻi brought us to a room full of women doing exactly that — taking chances, speaking up, and rising through one of the most traditionally male-dominated industries out there.

AHL was honored to join NAWIC Hawaii and the incredible panelists — including our own President and CEO Bettina Mehnert, who made her way from Germany to Honolulu without knowing English and built a career that led her to lead an 80-year-old firm. We enjoyed this candid conversation on leadership, pay equity, work-life balance, and what it really means to advocate for yourself.

Mahalo to for hosting and to for creating pilina. This is how the industry moves forward. Together.
