This week we got a call from a homeowner in Vestavia Hills who was certain her AC was on its way out because it hadn’t shut off in two days straight.

We went out expecting to find a dying system. Instead, we found a unit doing exactly what it’s supposed to do during a week like this. It was running close to nonstop just to keep up with the heat, no more, no less. No refrigerant issue, no worn-out capacitor, nothing failing. Just a system working as hard as it’s designed to when it’s this hot outside.

We could’ve upsold something. We didn’t. Told her what we found, why it’s normal right now, and what would actually be a red flag if she sees it (short-cycling, ice on the lines, warm air blowing).

She got a straight answer because it’s the only kind we give. And $0 charge for things she didn’t need.

Be honest - have you ever lowered the thermostat to 65 hoping the house would cool off faster?

Tempting, especially this week. But your AC only cools at one speed. Setting it to 65 instead of 72 doesn’t work any harder to get there. It just runs longer than you actually need, using more energy for nothing extra.

On a system already straining through days like these, that extra runtime works against you. And it doesn’t even guarantee better comfort, a system fighting the heat is already prioritizing temperature over pulling humidity out of the air.

Ever notice that on a scorcher like today, the house can still feel muggy even though the AC’s been running non-stop?

Here’s why: on the hottest days, your system is working flat out just to keep up with the heat pouring in. Cooling the air becomes the priority and pulling moisture out takes a back seat. The result? Cool air that’s still carrying more moisture than it should.

A few things can make it worse: an older system losing some of its dehumidifying ability, a thermostat fan set to “on” instead of “auto” (pushes moisture back into the house between cycles), or a system sized right at the edge with nothing left in reserve on days like this.

If your house feels sticky despite the AC running nonstop, it’s tempting but don’t just push the temperature lower. That works the unit harder without fixing the real problem. It’s worth having someone take a look.

If your AC feels like it’s running nonstop right now but your house still isn’t quite cool enough, you’re not alone. This time of year, that’s one of the most common calls we get.

A few things are usually behind it:

A dirty air filter is the easiest culprit AND the easiest fix. A clogged filter chokes airflow and makes your system work overtime for less cooling.

Low refrigerant is another common one. Your system isn’t “using it up,” so if levels are low, there’s a leak somewhere that needs to be found, not just topped off.

Sometimes it’s simply a system that was undersized for the house to begin with, especially in older homes that have been added onto over the years.

The honest answer is it could be any of these, and the only way to know for sure is to have someone actually look at it. That’s always been our approach: tell you what’s really going on, and whether it makes more sense to repair it or replace it.
