Lean-tos are one of the smartest, cleanest ways to expand a shop.

Before I ever built a deck…

I watched my paw balance a live welding arc on a Coke can.

Didn’t touch it. Just let it burn down the line—steady, perfect, hands off.

I was probably ten.
He handed me a hood and said,
“That’s how you weld. Now you try.”

No instructions. No warm-up.

That was my first lesson in precision.
Not perfection.
Precision.

He’d been taking me hunting and fishing since I was in diapers.

Taught me how to sit still. Pay attention. Wait for the moment that matters.

By the time I graduated high school, I’d spent every other weekend by his side.

We fished the Pendleton locks.
He once pulled out a catfish so big I could fit my whole head in its mouth.
(And I tried.)

We’d ride up mountain-sized piles of dredged sand in my uncle’s jacked-up Chevy.
I called it ‘Bigfoot’.

My paw didn’t build houses.
He built transformers. Welded full-time.
Taught me stick, then MIG, then TIG, then heliarc.

That Coke can was the start of it all.
The moment I realized you don’t need flash to do things right.

You need still hands. Clear eyes. And someone who gives a damn enough to show you.

That’s the energy behind Bronze Star.

Before I ever pressure washed a driveway…
I sold a rooster. For five bucks.
I was maybe six.
We had chickens—and one rooster that hated me.

Every time I stepped outside: feathers flared,
sideways charge, full attack mode.

Real-life Angry Bird.

My German Shepherd used to protect me—until she got hit by a car.
After that, it was just me, the yard, and that bird.

I’d kick, yell, swing sticks—he kept coming.

One day I’d had enough.
I walked next door where a contractor was building
my aunt and uncle’s house.

Him: That rooster’s got it out for you, huh?
Me: Yeah. I hate him.
Him: What are you gonna do about it?
Me: You can have him.
Him: (laughs)……Don’t you want to sell it?
Me: I don’t know what to ask. I just want him gone.
Him: I’ll give you five bucks.
Me: Sold. Take him today.

I don’t know what happened to that rooster.
Still don’t care.

I made my first sale—and kept moving forward.

These days, I solve bigger problems. With better tools.

But the energy’s the same: Take care of it like it matters. And stand by my work.
No chicken sales planned. 🐓
