keep in mind that when choosing black flowers for the garden, some may actually appear dark purple or red rather than pure black. Plant color is also likely to change depending on location and other factors, such as soil pH. Black plants may also require additional watering as their darker shades can make them more susceptible to withering from the hot sun. Look for different types of plants with similar growing requirements. There are numerous black plants to choose from that will add drama to your black garden—far too many to name. However, here is a list of black or dark-colored plants to get you started:

Phyllostachys nigra, commonly known as black bamboo, is a species of bamboo, native to Hunan Province of China, and is widely cultivated elsewhere.

Growing up to 25 m (82 ft) tall by 30 cm (1 ft) broad, it forms clumps of slender arching canes which turn black after two or three seasons. The abundant lance-shaped leaves are 4–13 cm (2–5 in) long.

Numerous forms and cultivars are available for garden use. The species and the form P. nigra f. henonis have both gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The form henonis is also known as Henon bamboo and as cultivar 'Henon'.

germination instructions Phyllostachys nigra - black bamboo:
Pre-soak bamboo seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water (about 86 F).

For sowing please use Jiffy 7 Peat Pellets, soak them in water and put in a plastic pot. Sow the seeds on the peat pellets and cover the seeds with a thin layer of peat (about 2 mm).

Then put the plastic pot in a ziplock bag - with a pot size of 6 cm , a ziplock bag of size 12 x 17 cm is recommended . Fill in the ziplock bag as much tap water with a few drops of universal fertilizer, so that after the absorption of the substrate a few mm of water remain on the bottom. Then close the ziplock bag - Ready!

More watering is not required because no moisture evaporates through the ziplock bag .

Location: on the windowsill or in a small greenhouse in partial shade, daytime temperatures at about 80–90 F, somewhat lower at night at 77-83 F. The resulting micro-climate provides ideal conditions for germination.

The germination time for bamboo seeds, depending on the species, will be between 10 and 40 days.

Finally got a citronella plant for my garden! This summer I have decided to start a "Gothic Garden" that will contain high contents of black plants. While I am waiting on seeds to come in the mail, I have started off with herbs known for their mosquito repelling properties. Some of these plants are Lavender, Citronella, Lemongrass, Catnip, Mint and Sage. I live in Texas where mosquitos are the size of pterodactyls and guarantee an itchy bite! My goal is to have plenty of these plants sprinkled through out my garden so I may garden in a comfortable yard without having to spend a fortune or smell like the bug spray I have to bathe in.
