Houston homeowners β spring is here, and the humidity is climbing fast. This week we're already seeing highs in the low 80s with south winds pulling moisture off the Gulf. That's when mold problems start showing up.
Here's the thing about Houston humidity: it doesn't take a flood or a burst pipe to trigger mold growth. When outdoor humidity stays above 60% β which it does across Harris County from now through October β moisture finds its way into your home through small gaps you might not even notice:
π Around window frames and door seals that have shifted over time
π In bathrooms without exhaust fans or with fans that vent into the attic instead of outside
π Behind furniture pushed against exterior walls where air can't circulate
π In closets and storage areas with no airflow
Mold can start growing within 24-48 hours once conditions are right β and in Houston, the conditions are right for about 7 months of the year.
A few things worth checking this weekend:
β
Make sure your AC is running and set to dehumidify (keep it at 78Β°F or below)
β
Check under sinks in kitchens and bathrooms for slow drips
β
Look for musty smells in closets, laundry rooms, and the garage
β
If you see discoloration on walls or ceilings, don't paint over it β get it tested
