The world’s only supplier of Gilsonite® uintaite, a natural hydrocarbon resin used oil & gas cementing, drilling fluids, asphalt, inks, paints, foundry and other applications. For over 100 years, American Gilsonite Company has been the world’s only supplier of Gilsonite® uintaite, a naturally occurring hydrocarbon resin found exclusively in our mines in Northeastern Utah. With a number of unique chemical properties and physical characteristics, Gilsonite® is used extensively as a high-performance additive in oil and gas drilling and other industrial applications. The strength, flexibility, extreme light weight and environmental safety of Gilsonite® make it a superior additive for cementing and drilling fluids. In the industrial market, Gilsonite® plays a vital role in improving the quality and performance of asphalt, inks, paints, stains, construction materials and foundry castings. We partner with our customers to understand their specific technical challenges and to develop products and solutions that capitalize on the superior performance of Gilsonite® uintaite in every application. We're proud to share that we have received the 2026 Mine Legacy Steward Award from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)!

The award recognizes our reclamation efforts at the Cowboy Mine in Utah, where our team worked to restore areas affected by historic mining activity. From reconstructing deteriorating mine shaft closures to improving safety and reseeding the surrounding land, these efforts went beyond reclamation requirements to help protect the site for the future.

Thank you to the BLM for this recognition and to the National Mining Association (NMA) for hosting the 2026 Mining Excellence Awards in Washington, D.C.

Samuel H. Gilson didn’t discover uintaite, but he recognized its potential. In the 1880s, he began experimenting with the unique natural mineral, exploring its uses and working to develop a market for it. His persistence helped lead to its first real commercialization – and eventually gave Gilsonite® its name.

Nearly 140 years later, the company he helped establish continues to mine, develop and formulate Gilsonite® products for applications around the world.

For more than a century, Gilsonite® uintaite has contributed to innovation across industries – including the early automotive industry. In the early 1900s, Gilsonite® uintaite was used in hard rubber battery casings, helping improve durability, chemical resistance and electrical insulation.
