Before the first golf swing, we have a building to lift.

At our Houston Heights project, the historic building retained on the property is getting a new purpose: a golf simulator. Getting it ready starts with the structure.

The orange squares mark where shoring cribs will support the building while we remove the existing foundation. We’ll rebuild the walls, create the clearance needed for a full golf swing, and lower the building onto its new foundation as part of the interior transformation.

Follow along as we share the work behind the transformation.

There’s something I really enjoy about looking back at a finished room and remembering everything that happened before it looked like this.

During construction, I’m not seeing a sitting room. I’m checking dimensions, looking at millwork, reviewing electrical locations and walking through details with our trades.

The finished photographs are beautiful, but as a builder, I’ll always see a little bit of the process behind them too.

Why crushed limestone over crushed concrete?

In our previous crawl space reel, we shared how the 10-mil poly beneath this Heights home helps limit ground moisture from reaching the floor joists and living space above. This time, Jeannine explains the material holding that barrier in place.

The limestone serves as ballast, weighing down the poly. Its smaller, rounded edges help protect against punctures, which is why we chose it over the sharper edges of crushed concrete.

Watch the linked reel for a closer look at the v***r barrier installation and how these details work together beneath the home.

A dining room made for lingering a little longer.

The wide opening creates a natural connection to the surrounding spaces while still allowing the dining room to feel distinctly its own.

One of those finished spaces we’re always happy to revisit.

There’s something to be said for keeping it simple.

A kitchen like this may look effortless when it’s finished, but there’s a lot happening behind those clean lines. Cabinetry, appliances, lighting, plumbing and an oversized island all have to come together just right.

We always enjoy seeing that work disappear into the finished space.

Some of the most important building details will never be seen once a home is finished.

At our Heights project, Jeannine walks us through the 10-mil poly v***r barrier we’re installing beneath the raised foundation to help limit ground moisture reaching the floor joists and living space above.

A layer of limestone will serve as ballast, weighing down the poly and keeping it in place. Along the foundation, adhesive tape and a termination bar secure the edges to complete this protective layer beneath the home.

Sometimes the spaces in between deserve just as much attention.

This light-filled breezeway connects the main home and pool house, turning what could have been a simple passage into a natural transition between the two. It’s a good example of how much the way spaces connect can shape the experience of a home.

Going behind the scenes of a custom build means seeing how the smallest details get problem-solved along the way.

At our French Flat renovation, continuous wood paneling runs through the gallery, with interior doors designed to blend seamlessly into the millwork. Concealed FritsJurgens M+ pivot hinges give us the clean finish the design calls for, along with the functionality our clients wanted.

We love sharing a closer look at what it takes to bring details like these to life.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that custom building is rarely about one big detail. It’s about getting hundreds of smaller decisions to work together.

In this dining room, the clean architecture creates the backdrop for a much more expressive mix of art, lighting and furnishings. Our job as the builder is to execute that backdrop with precision so the personality of the home can come through.

That balance is one of my favorite things to see when a project is complete.

When we’re building a custom home, we’re not just thinking about how a space looks when it’s finished. We’re thinking about what it will feel like to live here every day. The natural light, the quiet palette, the sense of space. All of it comes together to create a room that feels like a retreat within the home.

And really, who wouldn’t want to start the day here?
