Spring is just around the corner. Time for fertilizer, pre-emergent and preparation for insect and fungus control. All of the above are weather dependent and timing is everything. A phone call to me will get all of your questions answered.

Don't put up the lawn mower and yard tools just yet. You still need to feed, mow, water etc. even in the winter. Want some tips to win Yard of The Month when spring rolls around? Call me, I always have time to talk grass.

Now is the time to help your yard be the best on the block when spring time rolls around.
1. Fertilize your yard with a 1-3-2 ratio fertilizer. This will promote root growth and increase the chances of survival should we have a cold wet winter like is predicted.
2. Mow your grass every 7-10 days, even if its dormant. This will keep it fluffed so air and nutrients can get to the plant.
3. Make sure you water your grass at least once a week(about 1/2 to 1 inch) if we do not receive any rain fall.
4. Have a fertilizer, insecticide and fungicide program in place.
5. When ground temperatures start to warm(February) apply your first application of a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer with 50% Slow Release. If weather is still cool at night a preventative application of fungicide would be advisable because of the chances of Brown Patch, which is a soil born fungus that thrives in cool damp nights. During the early spring and fall/winter, water early in the morning so everything is dry before dark. This will help in the control of Brown Patch.
6. An application of an insecticide for the control of grubs is also advised. They will be coming out of hibernation and will be hungry. Have the preventative in place.

These few steps will help you be miles ahead when the spring come but you have to do it now.

Folks, it is the season to have been fertilizing and putting out insecticide for grubs. You need to have follow up treatments for grubs because of the cycles the grub goes through. If you have been seeing a lot of June Bugs, there is a reason. Its not just that time of year. The grubs you had have now developed into june bugs. Meaning that your task at hand is urgent. Remember the egg, larve and adult. Severe damage and death will occur if not treated. It wont be long till it will be hot and dry. So put moisture in the ground now. If we would be so lucky to get some rain, keep the moisture with timely waterings. It wont be long that you are gonna wish you had it. Your second application of fertilizer is right around the corner. Remember to water late in the evening or at night during the summer months.

Folks, Brown Patch season is here. Cool damp nights are the keys to be aware of. Cut back on excessive watering, especially past 12 noon. Frequencies should be monitored and adjusted to no more than once per week. Fall application of fertilizer should be very low Nitrogen and higher in Phosphorous and Potash.

Now that we have had these very welcome rains, there are a few things to watch for. Grey leaf spot will be the first to rare its ugly head. Grass blades will have small spots that usually start out oval. They have a tan center and dark brown(really maroon)border. Left untreated it will kill your grass. If you ever see something just not quite right with your grass, take a closer look because something is usually wrong. Find out and get it taken care of. Let me know if you need more info. By all means dont lose the moisture.

Its that time of year that you should start using slow release fertilizer, watching for fungus to rare its head, grubs to get real active and adjust your watering schedules, frequencies and length of watering. These differences will make a big difference with the overall health of your turf in the fall. Call if you need help or advice.

It is going to get hot and dry again this summer9typical summer pattern). Hopefully not as bad as last year. Don't wait, get your lawn ready for the brutal weather. Take advantage of the cooler weather and recent moisture and get your lawn established while you can. Adjusat waterings as the grass gets rooted and you will be glad you did. Want to know how? Give me a call if you need help.

Start spoon feeding now for a "First on your block" green spring yard. Slow feed gets a lot better results and not so much of an impact on your pocket book in the spring.

Water, water, water if you do nothing else. Want a good looking yard in the spring? Ask me anything you like. Lots of things you can do that promote healthy turf. Even during the dormant months. It will pay off if you just do some small things. Oh yea, dont forget to water.
