The worm shaft on my soybean oil expeller press cracked at the thrust collar from processing soybeans that were too dry and the press was running at maximum resistance for six hours straight. The shaft was deflecting under thrust load and oil yield was dropping because the press was not maintaining correct barrel pressure. I pulled the shaft out of the press, chucked it in the floor lathe, built the cracked collar up with hard-facing rod in five passes, and turned the collar back to spec in two cuts. Hard-facing rod handles the combined thrust and abrasion load better than the original material. Oil yield is back to full extraction rates. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The dead end anchor on my prestressed concrete stressing bed cracked through the web from a tendon break that sent the strand recoiling at full jacking force. The anchor was deflecting under the remaining tendon loads and the bed was unusable until it was fixed. I bled the remaining tendons, locked everything out, and ground the cracked web to a full V all the way through the plate. I preheated the anchor and welded it back with 7018 in eight passes. I back-gouged the root from the back side and ran three more passes. Eleven passes total. I welded 1/2 inch plate doublers on both faces of the anchor web and welded them with a continuous bead on all four edges. The bed has stressed 200 beams since without the anchor moving. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The grab pivot on my sugarcane loader cracked at the cylinder ear from picking a billet pile that had settled into a frozen mass overnight and the grab had to work twice as hard to break it loose. The grab was canting sideways and I was dropping cane on the way to the truck. I pulled the grab assembly down, ground the cracked ear to a full V, preheated it, and welded it back with 7018 in six passes. I back-gouged the root from the back side and ran two more passes. I added a 1/2 inch plate gusset on each side of the ear base and welded them with four passes each. The grab lifts frozen billet piles and delivers every load clean to the truck. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The element holder brackets inside my commercial ceramic kiln cracked at three of the wall mount welds from thermal expansion over 600 firing cycles at cone 10. The elements were sagging and one had contacted the ware shelf and shorted out during a glaze firing. I replaced the shorted element, pulled the cracked brackets, ground all three to bare stainless metal, and welded them back with 309 stainless MIG wire in three passes each. I slotted all the mounting holes by 5/16 inch to allow for thermal expansion so the brackets never load up in tension again. The elements hang straight and clear every shelf at full cone 10 temperature. No shorts since. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The brine tank baffle on my tuna longliner came loose at two weld seams from the constant thermal cycling between freezing brine and the ambient temperature of the tropics. The brine was sloshing hard on swells and the boat was rolling more than it should at sea. I drained the tank at the dock, cleaned the loose baffle seams to bare stainless metal, and TIG welded them back with 316 stainless filler in four passes each. I back-purged the inside face of each weld with argon through a copper tube so the inside surface stayed clean and hygienic. The tank is stable in any sea state now and the boat rolls less than it did when it was new. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The feed roll frame on my portable wood chipper cracked at the upper pivot casting from feeding a load of brushy material that had a hidden fence post in it that jammed the rolls and buckled the frame sideways. The feed rolls were misaligned and material was packing instead of feeding. I pulled the feed roll assembly out, ground the cracked casting to a full V, preheated it to 400 degrees, and welded it back with nickel rod in five passes. I peened every pass and let it cool in a sand bucket for 12 hours. I re-aligned the feed rolls with a straightedge and feeler gauges. The rolls feed every material type clean and the chipper hasn't packed since. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The worm gear housing on my 12-inch rotary table cracked at the worm shaft bearing boss from a collision where the cutter ran into a clamp bolt that was sticking up above the work surface during a full-depth profiling cut. The table was backlashing 6 thousandths and every circular pocket I milled was egg-shaped. I pulled the rotary table off the mill, disassembled the worm gear, ground the cracked boss to a full V, preheated the casting to 400 degrees, and welded it back with nickel rod in five passes. I peened every pass and buried the housing in sand for 16 hours. I line-bored the worm shaft bearing bore back to spec on the horizontal mill. Backlash is under half a thousandth. Circular pockets are round again. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The stanchion on my 10-meter diving platform cracked at the lower gusset weld from years of divers landing improperly and sending lateral shock loads into the structure. The platform was swaying slightly during approach runs and divers were complaining about feel at takeoff. I pulled everyone off the platform, shored the structure, ground the cracked gusset weld to full V on both sides, preheated the stanchion, and welded it back with 7018 in eight passes. I back-gouged the root and ran two more passes. I added a 1/2 inch plate collar around the stanchion at the repair zone and welded it with a continuous bead top and bottom. The platform is dead solid at any approach speed. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The elevator frame on my sugarbeet top saver cracked at the upper drive sprocket mount from processing beets that had heavy clay balls attached and were overloading the elevator on every pass. The sprocket was walking off the shaft and beet tops were piling instead of elevating. I pulled the elevator assembly off the machine, ground the cracked mount to bare metal, preheated it, and welded it back with 7018 in five passes. I added a 3/16 plate gusset on each side of the mount and welded them with four passes each. I also added a second set screw to the sprocket hub to keep it from walking. The elevator runs clean and handles clay-loaded tops without a single pile-up. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.
