Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future of Maritime Leadership
Alan C. McClure Associates, Inc. applauds the arrival of the Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano in Galveston and its participation in the Sail250 celebrations leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States.
As naval architects and marine engineers, we spend much of our time focused on modern vessel design, advanced analysis tools, and emerging technologies. Yet events like this remind us that the foundations of our industry were built on seamanship, leadership, discipline, and respect for the sea.
Launched in 1927 and still actively training future Spanish naval officers, Juan Sebastián de Elcano represents nearly a century of maritime tradition and professional development. The vessel has sailed more than a million nautical miles, completed multiple circumnavigations, and continues to provide hands-on training that cannot be replicated in a classroom.
Its visit to Galveston is especially meaningful as the city prepares to play a role in the Sail250 and America250 commemorations. Alongside Galveston's own historic tall ship ELISSA, this visit serves as a powerful reminder that maritime heritage continues to connect nations, cultures, and generations of mariners.
At ACMA, we believe the future of the maritime industry is strongest when innovation is built upon a deep understanding of the lessons, traditions, and leadership principles that have guided seafarers for centuries. Celebrating maritime heritage while investing in the next generation of maritime professionals is something worthy of recognition and support.
