Lawn Maintenance Best Practice #5
Prevent Brown Patches
If you see brown spots on your lawn they may be caused by insects or disease rather than lack of water.
If you see damage, contact your lawn care provider
to apply the proper type of fertilizer and/or w**d control product. They will be able to help you determine what best suits your lawn problem.

Lawn Maintenance Best Practice #5:
Manage Shaded Areas
Growing grass in shaded areas can be challenging. Lawns need sunlight to thrive, and when enough isn't received, the grass can thin out and even die. It also creates an environment for unwanted w**ds to grow due to the moisture that becomes stagnant with no light to dry it out.
Good practices such as pruning tree foliage to help increase the amount of light will help keep your lawn healthy and improve the look and feel of it.

Lawn Maintenance Best Practice #4:
Aerate
Heavy traffic areas are prone to compaction.
Aeration will loosen compacted soil, which
helps water, air and fertilizers reach the turf roots. It is a process of removing small cylindrical cores of soil and thatch from your lawn. Tools like a mechanical core aerator
can help with this process and can aerate a yard quickly to
maximize the area covered. A manual aerator can be used also. Typically, you should aerate once or twice a season. The best times for aerating cool season turf are spring and fall when the soil is moist. Cool season grass species include creeping bent grass, fine fescue, tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, annual ryegrass and perennial ryegrass. Warm season turf should be aerated in the summer. Warm season grass species include Bahia grass, bermuda grass, carpet grass, St. Augustine and zoysia grass.

Lawn Maintenance Best Practice #3:
Don’t over-fertilize
While fertilization has a direct influence on the ability of your lawn to resist common diseases, too much can actually hurt.
Make sure your lawn is properly fertilized with the right amount at the right time of year but avoid adding too much fertilizer. This can cause unwanted damage such as yellowing or browning, or even kill healthy grass. Let the lawn experts at Mow Stars advise you as to when and how much fertilizer to use based on your specific lawn needs.

Lawn Maintenance Best Practice #2:
Water regularly
Healthy grass requires 1 in. of water per week during the active growing season, and should be
adjusted based on weather conditions. For the best results, apply small amounts of water during the week
and not all at once. Water in the morning or early afternoon during the heat of the day.
Watering at night produces a wet lawn, creating ideal conditions for disease. Watering during heat and
moisture deficient periods can encourage grass recovery, reduce w**ds and helps prevent
some diseases and insect damage.

Lawn Maintenance Best Practice #1:
Maintain a recommended
mowing height.
Mowing height recommendations vary by grass
type. The Houston area is predominantly St. Augustine which should be maintained at 2.5-4 in. regularly.
Avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the surface of the grass blade. Mowing too short can damage the turf. Grasses with
higher mowing heights are better able to compete
with w**ds and tolerate droughts.
Keep mower blades sharp. Dull mower blades
tear the grass rather than cutting it and creates an uneven appearance. Additionally, mow when your
grass is dry to avoid mounds of clippings which can
smother the grass if not removed. Mowing dry turf allows
even distribution of clippings over the lawn which allows for consistent insulation of the roots from heat and locks in moisture.
