Terraced stone steps, layered plantings, and a river rock border that keeps the whole bed clean and defined. Hydrangeas, daylilies, and hostas fill in the color while mulch and stone work together to hold everything in place, so the bed stays this sharp season after season.

A curved paver border transforms this backyard into a series of framed garden moments, hydrangeas and hostas on one side, a bold purple bloom island on the other, all tied together by a winding path of green lawn. Mulch keeps every bed neat, while landscape lighting carries the design right into the evening. Sometimes the shape of your border does as much work as the plants inside it.

Manicured hedges, white hydrangeas, and a smooth pebble border that gives this bed a clean, modern edge. Structured topiaries and layered plantings create depth against the home’s architecture, while the mulch and stone edging keep every line crisp. It’s proof that a well-defined border can turn any bed into a focal point.

Same solid process, different finish. Clear the ground, set the border, lay the barrier, and build up with fresh soil. Plant your bigger specimens first, then fill in with mid-size and small plants. This time we finished with white decorative stone for a brighter, more modern contrast against the greenery, then let the landscape lighting do the rest. The result: a bed that looks just as good after sunset as it does in daylight.

The stone you choose changes the whole mood of the space, not just the look during the day.

Coneflowers, salvia, daylilies, and hydrangeas layered together in a bed that looks just as good lit up at night as it does in daylight. Fresh mulch ties it all together, holding moisture and giving every color room to pop. This is what a weekend of planting can do for your curb appeal.

A palm tree, layered greenery, and fresh mulch turn a front entrance into a first impression that lasts. Crisp bed lines and rich, dark mulch make every plant pop, from the ornamental grasses to the pop of pink blooms by the door. This is what a little mulch and a well-defined bed can do for your curb appeal.

Not every yard needs to be all green. This bed started the same way, cleared, leveled, bordered, and layered with a barrier and fresh soil, but the plant palette took a different direction: agaves, palms, and drought-tolerant varieties built for Houston heat. Bigger structural plants went in first to anchor the space, then smaller succulents filled the gaps. A deep watering set everything in place.

Less mowing, less upkeep, and a bed that holds its shape through the hottest months.

Thinking about a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant yard? Central Rock & Mulch has the materials to help you build it right.

Soft whites, grays, and warm earthy tones that fit any style of yard. Natural limestone is 100% real stone, hard and durable enough to resist weathering, and it improves drainage while helping prevent erosion wherever it’s placed. It’s naturally weed-resistant and easy to keep clean, just rinse when needed, and it works just as well in a modern landscape as it does in a rustic or desert-style one.

Naturally strong. Timelessly beautiful.

Curious if natural limestone is right for your space? Ask for it at the yard.

Not all sand is created equal. Coarse sand drains up to 10 times faster than fine sand, which is why it’s the top choice for paver bases and French drains. Contractors call it the “structural” sand because its bigger grains lock together and resist shifting under patios and walkways. It also stays looser underfoot, which is why playgrounds and volleyball courts rely on it instead of fine sand. Mixed into heavy clay soil, it opens up air pockets that help plant roots breathe and drain excess water. And unlike fine sand, it won’t wash away easily in heavy rain, making it ideal for erosion control on slopes.

Building a patio, fixing drainage, or dealing with clay soil? Ask for coarse sand at the yard.
