But that's not the scam it sounds like — it's just that solar kills your energy charge, not your utility relationship. The grid is still your backup at night and in January, and connection has a price.
The two things that actually blindside people: seasonal swing (systems are sized annually, so winter looks scary if you went solar in spring) and true-up (most utilities settle once a year, so twelve calm statements turn into one big one).
