Straight answer: yes, you'll still get an electric bill after going solar. Every month. Forever.

But that's not the scam it sounds like — it's just that solar kills your energy charge, not your utility relationship. The grid is still your backup at night and in January, and connection has a price.

The two things that actually blindside people: seasonal swing (systems are sized annually, so winter looks scary if you went solar in spring) and true-up (most utilities settle once a year, so twelve calm statements turn into one big one).

Plug-in solar is having a moment. Small panels that plug straight into a wall outlet — no contractor, no permit — are now legal in 8 states, with 24+ more considering it.
The enthusiasm is mostly justified. For the 70% of Americans locked out of rooftop solar by cost, roof design, or renting, this is the first real on-ramp to making their own power. That genuinely matters.

But here's the part nobody's saying out loud: a typical plug-in system caps at 800 watts. The average rooftop system is 7.2 kilowatts — about 9x more.

So let's be honest about 800 watts. It offsets a fridge, a laptop, and some lights. It will NOT run your AC through a summer. And it provides zero backup power — by law, these systems shut off when the grid goes down.

None of that makes plug-in solar bad. It makes it a starting point, not a destination.
