That quick flicker when your AC kicks on isn't random, it's your compressor pulling a big burst of power to start up. Once it settles into normal running mode, the power draw drops and your lights bounce back. Occasional, brief dimming is pretty normal, especially in older homes.

If your AC isn't cooling properly, it usually doesn't just "need more refrigerant." Refrigerant doesn't get used up; low levels almost always mean there's a leak.

That's what we found during a recent Hage Energy service call. The homeowner's system was low on refrigerant, and oily residue on the evaporator coil confirmed it was leaking. We also found a newer R-32 condenser paired with an older, failing evaporator coil that wasn't properly matched.

Instead of simply adding refrigerant, we fixed the root cause by replacing the leaking evaporator coil with a new coil designed to work with the R-32 system. After verifying the refrigerant charge and testing performance, the system was cooling exactly as designed.

Why Is My Indoor AC Running, But the Outside Unit Isn't?

A homeowner recently called us because their AC wasn't cooling. The indoor blower was running, but the outdoor condenser never came on.

We started by checking power to the outdoor unit. High voltage was present, so the breaker wasn't the issue. Next, we checked the low-voltage control signal that tells the condenser to start.

The signal was leaving the indoor air handler but never made it to the condenser. After tracing the wiring, we found the low-voltage wire had failed.

We replaced the damaged wire, and the outdoor unit started right up. Afterward, we verified refrigerant pressures and electrical amperage, and everything checked out. The supply air temperature at the plenum measured 73°F, confirming the system was cooling properly.

If your indoor fan is running but the outside unit isn't, don't assume you need a major repair. Sometimes the problem is as simple as a damaged control wire. That's why a proper diagnosis is always the first step.

If your zoned HVAC system has been clicking on and off unexpectedly, the zone control board could be to blame. This kind of short cycling, where your system starts and stops more often than it should, can hurt comfort, spike energy bills, and wear out equipment faster than normal.

During a recent inspection, we found an outdated Honeywell zone control board causing exactly this issue. The fix: replacing it with a new, updated Honeywell zoning control panel. Existing zone dampers stay in place and get reconnected to work with the new board.

Why Is My Air Vent Dripping Water?

That drip from your air vent isn't rain, it's your AC telling you something's wrong.

Water dripping from a vent usually means your condensate drain line is clogged. Your AC pulls moisture out of the air, that moisture drips into a drain pan, and exits through a drain line. When that line gets blocked by algae, mold, or debris, water backs up and overflows. In Houston's humidity, it can happen within a single season.

A dirty air filter is the other common cause. It chokes airflow over the evaporator coil, which freezes it. When the system shuts off, the ice melts all at once and floods the pan.

Before you call, check two things: your air filter and your drain pan. If the filter is gray and packed, replace it. If the pan is full of standing water, the drain line is blocked.
