If you have recently experienced hail at your house, here’s some information that might be helpful.
Myth: Hail damage will cause your roof to start leaking immediately.
Fact: Hail that’s less than 2-3” diameter typically is not large enough to cause damage that needs immediate repair. What it does is bruise the shingles, knock granules off, and loosen the adhesive on the back of the shingle. This in turn lessens the life of the shingle and makes it more susceptible to future wind and rain damage.
Myth: A roofing company can absorb the cost of your deductible so you can replace your roof at no cost to you.
Fact: This is illegal. A few years ago, Texas legislature made it a felony for contractors or homeowners to submit an invoice to an insurance company that is more than what the homeowner actually paid. It’s insurance fraud. This was to insure that the homeowners were paying their deductible, and not pocketing any overage. Reputable roofing companies will not offer a free roof to you.
Myth: I have to use the company my insurance company recommends or refers to me.
Fact: You can use whatever contractor you want to replace your roof. You just need your submit a final invoice to the insurance company detailing what you received and what you paid.
We highly recommend you use a contractor who is associated with one or more shingle manufacturers, and offers a reasonable installation warranty period of 5 years or more. Anything not done correctly may take up to a year to show up.
Myth: I need to have my roof inspected before I contact my insurance company.
Fact: If you suspect you have hail damage, contact your insurance company. They will either send an adjuster to check your roof, or they will ask you to have it verified before they send someone. Be very cautious about letting someone who knocks on your door, up on your roof. Some are just looking for a payday and may create damage that wasn’t there before. If the insurance company suspects the damage is “mechanical or man made”, they will deny your claim and may require you replace the roof at your expense.
Ask for references, ask for proof of liability insurance, check their online reviews. This will w**d out the fly-by-night guys who are knocking on doors hoping to scare a customer into using them. The absolute best way to find a good contractor is to ask your friends and neighbors.
