Buying a new home can bring on new projects you may not be prepared to tackle before moving in. These home owners bought this house and wanted to update the space to make it feel like home for them before they moved in.

We got them on the schedule and turned around the work in time for their move in date. The flat ceilings were textured and painted, damaged drywall repaired and holes patched, as well as all walls of the house painted to bring the home to a clean slate for them to decorate as they please.

We appreciate them trusting us with their home and hope they enjoy their new space.

Wrapped up this interior in Hudson, WI! It had been 15 years or so since this space had been updated, in 15 years a lot of wear and tear can make your most used spaces look tired.

We came in, repaired some failing seam tape in the ceilings, blended the knockdown texture, and painted the ceilings and walls. Now the space looks modern, larger and cleaner with bright ceilings and smooth walls. It’s crazy what a paint job can do for your home 😁

Wrapped up this deck in Lindstrom last week‼️

Home owners will often ask me, “what the “best” stain for decks?”. My answer is almost always longer than they expect because the short answer is; no stain on your deck will last as long as paint or stain on your siding.

Decks typically will need to be stained every 3-4 years here in the St Croix Valley, largely due to the extremes of winter and summer taking a toll on the wood.

In our view, wood has a “life span”. In the beginning, we recommend an oil-based translucent stain to really show off the grain of the wood, then re-coat every 3-4 years until the stain needs to be removed and moving down the line in transparency to semi-transparent. We recommend this because as wood ages, it discolors, and the pigments of the semi-transparent stain help it appear uniform.

Every stain job is different, so make sure you give us a call for a free estimate and we can protect your wood and make it look good!

This is a 1890’s farmhouse with lead paint, but hadn’t been painted in almost 40 years… a few replaced boards, “some” primer and a couple coats of paint later, things look as good as ever.

Take care of your largest investment early and save yourself from the bigger ticket items like brand new siding down the road!

Let’s talk stain…

This is at an upcoming job in Hudson, WI. This homeowner wants us to stain his deck, sauna and a couple other items.

Have you ever tried to stain something, and it just doesn’t look how you imagined it? It’s likely what you did or didn’t do before applying the stain.

Every good painter will say, “prep is the most important part of painting or staining”. That statement couldn’t be more right. Not only is it the most important, but knowing the best practice for each job is just as important. This sauna will be getting stained later this week and this is the before and after from the wash today.

This wash is necessary for staining fresh/raw wood that needs to be treated due to UV weathering. Don’t let your painter skip this!

Happy Spring!

We have officially hit exterior season in the Midwest! (At least when Mother Nature decides not to rain). We’ve been loading up our schedule as everyone is preparing their houses or cabins for summer.

As of now, we are FULLY BOOKED through the middle of June. Thank you to those who have gotten ahead of the game and booked a project with us in the last few weeks. We can’t wait to see these jobs get taken care of!

Hey everyone! My name is Zach Melton, owner of St Croix Valley Paint and Stain, welcome to the page of your local home service company, based out of Hudson, WI, but servicing all of the St Croix Valley.

For newer companies, a lot of people will ask “why should we choose you?”. Which I think is a great question, and every home owner should ask it. Let me explain why we think our process is best fit for giving your home the update it need!

Houses are NOT all the same. From generation to generation, building and the skills throughout the process have changed significantly. This requires contractors to have a deep understanding of methods and materials used throughout time, past and present.

I started my life in the painting world in 2017 as a college kid trying something new and went through that summer soaking up painting knowledge through an internship. That lasted one year and I thought life was taking me in a different direction. Fast forward to 2021, following a year in recreational management, I became a Project Manager for a contractor in Minneapolis. Running 8-12 crews for 8 months per year, producing upwards of 15 projects a week. Needless to say, I believe the volume of projects you’ve seen directly correlates to one’s understand of best practices for houses. From carpentry, to washing, prep/painting/staining and more, I’ve seen and done it all.

Eventually one gets weary of seeing money come and go for a business but only seeing such small percentages in return. I will forever appreciate my 4 years of management with my former company, but eventually I felt drawn to trying to put that much effort into my own opportunities.

This is where SCVPS was born, in December of 2025, I took the leap to entrepreneurship. I want to be able to implement my years of experience with a large contractor, and bring that level of service and quality to home owners, but cut out the large amounts of overhead costs. I believe business is best dealt in the small business realm, more hands on communication with ownership/management to ensure smooth communication throughout a project, a clear understanding of who exactly will be working on your house, as well as efficient and quality work you and I can both be proud of.
