Imagine a pipe bursts in your home. Water is gushing everywhere, and panic sets in. The absolute first thing you need to do is turn off the main water supply—but you can’t do that if you don’t know where it is!
Don't wait for an emergency to find out. Take 5 minutes today to locate your water main. Here is where it’s most likely hiding:
🏠 1. Inside the House (Look Low!)
If you have a basement or a crawlspace, the valve is usually located there, near the front wall of your house (closest to the street).
Look for the main pipe coming through the wall or floor.
It will usually have a round wheel handle or a straight lever handle.
🚜 2. Near the Water Meter (The Perimeter)
If you don't have a basement, check the utility room, garage, or near your water heater. The shut-off valve is almost always located right next to your water meter.
🌳 3. Outside in a Meter Box
In warmer climates, your main shut-off might be outside near the street or property line. Look for a plastic or metal ground-level box (often labeled "WATER"). Tip: You might need a meter key or a pair of pliers to open it!
💡 Pro-Tips from the Pros:
The "Right" Way: If it’s a wheel handle, turn it clockwise ("Righty-Tighty") to shut it off. If it’s a lever handle, pull the lever so it sits perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the pipe.
Tag It! Once you find it, wrap a piece of brightly colored tape or hang a tag on it. Make sure everyone in the family knows where it is!
