A furnace can sound perfectly normal and still not be safe to leave running.

That's what one of our techs found in a Humboldt home this past year. The furnace itself was an easy fix, a small part swap and it fired back up. But the part that keeps the flame separated from the air moving through the house was worn through with rust, badly enough that the furnace was giving off carbon monoxide, a dangerous odorless gas.

The tech shut the gas to that furnace off right there. Not patched. Off.

Turning it off wasn't the end of the visit, it was the start of doing it right. That furnace came out and was replaced with a new system that could actually be trusted to run safely, not just one that sounded fine.

If your furnace hasn't had a look yet this year, now's a good time to get a tune and clean scheduled before the cold really sets in.

A handful of the AC calls we've had this past month for a cooling system that suddenly quit cooling weren't broken systems - they were blocked ones.

In Dakota City, an outdoor condenser was so caked with debris that a technician had to take it apart just to clean the coil. Once it was clear, the pressure problem shutting the system down went away.

In Humboldt, a unit wasn't cooling because the indoor fan was matted with hair and debris, blocking airflow across the coil. Once it was cleaned and reinstalled, it cooled fine again.

In Rockwell City, a rooftop unit was dirty enough to trip its own high-pressure switch and shut itself off. Our tech fixed it by cleaning the coil and resetting the switch.

Then there's Goldfield. A homeowner called about a house at 85 degrees, and by the time our technician showed up, it was already cooling. They'd cleaned the outdoor condenser themselves first.

Each of those service calls pointed to the same thing, blocked airflow. And one of our customers beat the NCIS truck and was able to solve the issue themselves!

Take a look at your outside unit before you give us a call. If the coil's caked with debris, clean it off and see if that solves your issue. And if it doesn't, or you'd rather we just handle it for you, we're happy to come take a look either way! 🔧
