🔎 Friable vs. Non-Friable Materials: What’s the Difference?
When it comes to asbestos, understanding the difference is critical for safe handling and abatement.

Friable asbestos-containing materials can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry. This makes it easier for asbestos fibers to become airborne and pose a health risk.

Non-friable asbestos-containing materials are bound within a solid material, making them less likely to release fibers when intact. However, cutting, sanding, drilling, or damaging these materials can release hazardous fibers.

⚠️ The bottom line: Both types can pose health risks if asbestos fibers become airborne. Never disturb suspected asbestos-containing materials without proper assessment and precautions.

California Tightens Wildfire Cleanup Rules

Recent California Law: Wildfire & Asbestos/Lead Cleanup

AB 1642 and AB 1795, signed September 2026, establish California’s first statewide standards for testing and remediating lead and asbestos contamination from wildfire smoke. The laws also require qualifying insurance coverage for testing, remediation and restoration.
