Long Island Veterinary Specialists was established as Long Island's first 24 hour critical care and trauma center equipped with CT and MRI in a 12,000 square foot facility, in June 1998. As their services outgrew their initial space, they acquired more space, and ultimately the entire building in Plainview, with the vision to expand all services and create an education center.
Initial design concepts for this latest expansion were developed in 2016, with construction breaking ground in early 2020. The multi-year project is poised to re-open, as phases 1 and 2 of the three phase project have been completed in February 2023.
The hospital was in a nondescript building in an industrial park along the Long Island Expressway. The architects identified that it was important to establish a dramatic physical presence, that was iconic and recognizable, day and night, at highway speeds on the LIE. The new modern facade is pierced by an angled two-story high waiting room and entry vestibule, with broad expanses of glass, to welcome clients.
The waiting room has doubled in size, with amenities that include varied seating areas, refreshments, and airport-style media counters with stools and built-in charging ports.
Exam room capacity has expanded from 14 to 22 rooms, with all existing and new exam rooms being designed specifically for various specialties.
To eliminate the need to walk patients outdoors, a spacious indoor facility- aptly named Central Bark, was designed to create a sanitary indoor potty area.
The newly completed LIVS Education Center, featuring a 95-seat tiered amphitheater and a large conference room, both with fully integrated state-of-the-art multi-media capabilities, support their relationship with the College of Veterinary Medicine at LIU.
The project site was completely redesigned, to improve parking and safety for staff and clients.
