With cost of utilities going up, here are a few helpful tips to make sure you are doing what you can to save energy.

1. Check and change your air filter monthly during cooling season! This not only helps your unit run more efficiently, it also prolongs the longevity of the unit. A clean filter significantly improves an air conditioner’s efficiency, lowering your energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent.

2. Make sure you have your unit annually PM’d. Preventive maintenance, if you aren’t doing that yourself, it’s important that coils are cleaned of debris and drain line cleaned to maximize the efficiency and lifespan of the unit.

3. Install a programmable thermostat! This one is huge! This technology allows you to raise and lower the temperature of your AC based on a preset schedule, which can save hundreds of dollars annually. Boost your energy efficiency even more by closing vents in unoccupied rooms as well as keeping closet and cabinet doors shut so excess air doesn’t get in.
