With a pile driving load test, a reaction frame is attached to the reaction piles and spans over the top of the test pile. As the load is applied by a hydraulic jack, the reaction beam transfers the load to the test pile, putting it in compression and putting the reaction piles in tension to test the driven piles’ capabilities.

The most common use of pile driving is in the creation of deep foundations. Unlike the shallow foundations that rest on the surface, deep foundations are used in situations where more support is needed. These could include large design loads or poor soil at shallow depths.

Driven piles are an excellent option in negative environments. Larger diameter piles work well in earthquake-prone areas; piles can be coated with protectants in corrosive environments; and non-displacement piles can be used in areas where impact on nearby structures must be considered.

Hammer driving isn’t always effective in sandy or gravelly soils, which is usually when we switch to vibratory driving. This kind of driving vibrates the pile enough to break up the friction between the soil pieces so the pile can be pushed into the ground.

For marine or near shore applications, driven piles are a superior option. There is no waiting for concrete to cure, and special casings do not need to be installed – thereby reducing costs associated with time and extra materials.

If it is time to change your docking area, do not leave old pilings in place to create a boating hazard. Have old pilings removed before installing new ones. The process is simple, and the same equipment is used for both processes.

Perhaps the earliest mention of a pile driver comes to us from written documents that describe a pile driver being used over 5,000 years ago at the Crannogs at Oakbank in Scotland. A pile driver was said to have been used in the construction of Loch Tay in Scotland as well.

When most of us think about hammers, we think about the standard claw hammer used for things like pounding in nails, but a hammer is anything used to transfer an impact to an object. Pile drivers lift large, heavy hammers using pulleys, then drop them to drive piles into the ground.

Vibratory hammers use a combination of different eccentric weights that are counter-balanced and hydraulically powered. These are balanced so that the horizontal vibrations are canceled out, while the vertical vibrations are transferred into the pile to drive it into the ground.

The oldest of pile driving methods were, as their names imply, piles driven, or hammered, into the ground. At first, it was manpower – people raining blows on top of the pile to push it into the surface. Later, technology advanced to the point where machines could provide the needed force.

A pile driver is a mechanical device used in construction to drive piles (poles) into the ground. These piles, once deep in soil, serve the purpose of creating structural support (or a foundation) for buildings and other structures. Pile driving rigs are also called pile drivers.

The pile driving technique's historical beginning is very blurry and the true origin remains unknown. However, there are drawings of such a device that date back over five hundred years. Some mechanical varieties are dated up to 5,000 years ago!
