Beautiful white oak round table bound for the west coast! The top breaks down into halves. Repeat clients are the best. This will be joining a 10’ dining table I built for them a few years back. The pedestal base was designed to match the turned legs on the dining table. I couldn’t be happier with the end result.

River tables seem to catch a lot of flack amongst seasoned woodworkers. You can argue that it’s not real woodworking, or that you don’t want a plastic table—that’s fine. To each their own. I think we can all agree that they make some absolutely gorgeous furniture. It is a great way to showcase incredible slabs in all of their natural beauty. These maple slabs are a shining example of that. You don’t get the full experience until you walk around the table and watch the grain undulate as the angle of sunlight changes. Is it woodworking? Who can say? Is it beautiful? You’re damn right it is.

Delivery day for this beauty. This was a fun one. Walnut, cherry, maple, oak, and a touch of holly. The live edge pieces in the top were the offcuts of a couple of slabs used for my clients’ existing dining table, making it the perfect compliment. It’s always fun when you get a long design leash. Give me that, and I promise you won’t see another piece like it. Genuinely looking to hear y’all’s thoughts on it!

This one came across my Snapchat memories today. 4 years ago, this became the last piece of furniture I built before leaving my engineering career behind. This piece has since undergone 4 years of use, and sometimes abuse.

These days, it often serves as a kitchen, racetrack, workbench, or whatever else my nephew’s imaginations turn it into. That’s a little different from a time when you would receive a sharp side-eye for so much as a resting a tennis shoe on the edge. 👀

My clients often request a bulletproof table capable of handling a variety of things. The worst of which usually being a highly competitive game of spoons. If you know, you know. The truth is, there is no bulletproof species or finish. And that’s okay. While there’s definitely a serene beauty to an almost flawless piece of brand new furniture, something totally different, but equally as beautiful, happens years later. When a hardwood table develops its patina from years of use, it’s almost as if every scratch and ding imbeds the memory of that moment into the table. Every family meal, every late night game of spoons, and every hot wheels Grand Prix are all preserved within the wood.

When I set out to build furniture for others, I adopted the rule that, if it won’t outlive myself, I won’t let it leave the shop. These days, that kind of thing is few and far between. I take a lot of pride in providing furniture pieces that will one day be passed down, or better yet, fought over. Something now worth far more than the dollars that paid for it all those years ago. Strive for quality in a world of good-enough, and some cool things just may follow.

Today I didn’t get much business done. I made a supply run, and got some quotes out, but that’s about it. I spent the rest of the day making this little piece. I had an idea in my head, and I wanted to make it real worse than I wanted to make any money today, evidently.

When you monetize an artisan’s hobby, you often go from creating for yourself to creating for others. While creating for others is an incredible and unique experience, it can sometimes rob some of the passion that you have for your trade. Don’t get me wrong, witnessing the joy that your creations bring others is a truly fulfilling experience. However, when you spend every work day building for clients, it can really start to feel like a JOB, and we can’t be havin’ that.

To combat this, I like to work in a day here and there to build something for myself or my wife. I have a couple criteria for these projects. They have to be able to be completed in one day, and have to be simple enough to work on the fly. When I am working to both of those, and a good playlist, I can find that flow-state. That elusive feeling when you are working at your craft effortlessly. When your muscles don’t seem to need your brain to tell them to move. They just know what needs to be done. That feeling that makes you forget to eat lunch, and all of the sudden it’s the end of the day. Any time you feel that feeling, you remember why you picked up these tools in the first place. It’s a fleeting feeling that’s often forgotten, but it’s oh so sweet. Find your flow-state, and remember how you found it. After that, you can summon it on command.

Although I didn’t technically do much today to bolster my business, I did a whole lot to bolster my passion in the shop. I’ll save more than the one “lost” day over the next few weeks by operating with a renewed passion. It’s funny how one little sketch and picture frame can do all that, huh?

In short, take care of yourself. Put your oxygen mask on before your kids.. or clients.

I’m going to start using my captions as an excuse to do a little light writing. They’re mostly pictures, so only 4 people will see them anyway. I hope you enjoy… The final piece to our bedroom set never got the spotlight it deserves. Very little planning went into this project, as is true for most of the things I build for myself. I tend to work quickly, and on the fly, in order to get back on schedule with my commissions. We had been using a hand-me-down dresser since we got married in 2015, and the rest of the bedroom set had been built for over a year. Eventually, I found some spare time, and had a simple design in mind, so I got to work. I knew the reclaimed oak would tell its own story, so I wanted to keep the design relatively simple, while throwing in a few subtle design features. Progress came fast, as a result of the simplicity. On the outer structure, at least. The drawers didn’t come until many months later. To my surprise, this is one of my favorite pieces in our house. Something about it just brings me joy. The way the centenarian oak, that was slowly deteriorating after a long life of housing livestock and hay stores, will now live on with a whole new profession. It now houses my underwear. Among other things. A less noble profession, for sure, but honest work nonetheless. I thoroughly enjoy looking at and using this piece. Which is great, because it’s one of the first and last things I use every day. May you begin and end your days finding joy in the little things.
